"If the exotic quality in Lafcadio Hearn was made authentic by observation that of John Luther Long 1861-1927 was largely the product of his imagination at times of high order and one that has not had proper appreciation either in fiction or drama. He was never in Japan but inspired by information which he received from his sister Mrs. Irwin Currell he established an atmosphere which has the illusion of reality and from it he evolved one character at least of supreme importance who has passed into world literature . Long continued his exotic romance in THE FOX WOMAN 1900 an imaginative novel of a crippled Japanese artist and his worship of a beautiful but soulless American woman to whom he is just a passing whim. She is the 'Fox Woman' of the Japanese who is without a soul. For her own pleasure she models him after the hideous Ni-O figures and in order to please her he tries to look like these grotesques until he grows as bestial as they and his soul becomes subject to his body just as before his ugly body had been made noble in the eyes of his wife Jewel by the splendor of his soul. Long uses effectively the utter submission of a Japanese wife to her husband's will in Marushida's present to Miss Carroway of Jewel for her body servant. The inevitable discovery on the artist's part of his abandonment by the goddess and the return of Jewel are told simply and naturally." - Quinn American Fiction pp. 516-518. Long is best known for his long short story "Madame Butterfly" dramatized in collaboration with David Belasco later made into the famous opera by Puccini. Wright III 3388. 193126335Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company. Very Good-. c.1931. First Edition. Hardcover. no dust jacket a decent enough copy moderately worn with some soiling to the bottom of the text block; there's also a weird bit of damage to the upper left corner of the rear pastedown where it appears that some previous owner had crudely cut away a bookseller's ticket unfortunately in a way that tore the cloth a bit and exposed about an inch of the top edge of the rear board adjacent to the spine the integrity of the binding however has not been compromised. An Irish-in-America family saga about a family who rose to success in the New York business world over the period from the 1850s to the early 1930s but whose dynasty is eventually brought low by intrafamily rifts and rivalries. Luther 1872-1951 was a prolific novelist and magazine-fiction writer; in addition to this straight novel he also collaborated with Ms. Ford on a couple of Los Angeles-set mystery tales. . Influential manual for mothers and nurses by Holt 1855-1924 an American author physician and pioneer in the field of pediatrics who helped shape the New York Babies Hospital into the leading pediatric facility of its time. The book was expanded from Holt's Catechism for Nurses 1893 a pamphlet prepared for nursery-maids during their four months training at the Babies Hospital. "The nurses studied the catechism and when they graduated took it with them. There followed requests for copies from their employers and the supply was soon exhausted. It was apparent there was a popular demand for something of the kind. The catechism was expanded and in 1894 The Care and Feeding of Children made its appearance.Probably no one would have been more surprised than Dr. Holt or his publishers had they been told that they were launching a volume that was to go through seventy-five printings and which was to be translated into Spanish Russian and Chinese. The book became the mainstay of many a worried mother and exerted no inconsiderable influence on the profession as well for the practitioners had to keep abreast of the pediatric knowledge which the mothers possessed" DUFFUS R.L. L. Emmett Holt. NY 1940 pp.116-117.

Prior to the publication of The Care and Feeding of Children there was no standard text for pediatric care in print for laymen or medical professionals.
