Wiley a pioneering North Carolina educator. Wiley was the first superintendent of North Carolina Common Schools working to reorganize and expand the school such that literacy increased and North Carolina became an education leader among Southern states. The book was first published in 1851; this is the third revised edition.<br /> <br /> The reader contains descriptions of the various cities and regions of the state statistical information and a series of North Carolina themed essays and poems including "importance of female society in improvement of mind and formation of character" and "advantages of state pride". The text prints statistics regarding enslaved persons in the state and stresses that that state should be welcoming to farmers of all stripes including slaveowners. Another section covers a planned July 1775 slave rebellion emphasizing the violent intentions of the would-be participants and criticizing their British supporters: "they had been directed to fall on the night of the 8th on the white family in which they resided; and after destroying it to set fire to the buildings and proceed thus from plantation to plantation.This plan agrees with that suggested by the celebrated Samuel Johnson a distinguished English critic but a hateful bigot and uniform defender of tyranny." Stowe's thesis is that "the chain of documentary evidence has been broken. The author writes in the preface: ".Each one of the books of the New Testament must be traced up to the Apostles who only had authority to deliver inspired books to the churches. This is what the present volume professes to do. It is a book of authorities and testimonies; it is the tracing and verifying of title deeds." "But there are some deeds in which the chain is broken before we get to the original proprietors; there are some which are forgeries and others which were given by the persons whose names they bear but these persons had no authority to make the sales. All such deeds are invalid and confer no title." "These latter deeds represent the apocryphal books. It is proposed to show that every one of the apocryphal books belongs to one of these three classes to wit: 1. They can not be traced to the apostles; 2. Some of them are proved to be forgeries; 3. And others though genuine were written by persons who had no apostolic authority to give them to the churches." <br /> <br /> Stowe was married to Harriet Beecher Stowe and while the two were part of a group which provided shelter to northward-bound freedom seekers aka escaped slaves or free Blacks "<br /> <br /> ".As references in William Lloyd Garrison's radical abolitionist paper The Liberator document although Stowe privately decried slavery he was no abolitionist. He believed slavery was sanctioned by the Bible and that through Christian education slavery would gradually fade away. He was instead an advocate of colonization of free Blacks in Liberia as a "solution" to slavery. It was only after his wife Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin was published in 1852 that Stowe began haltingly to change his stance regarding slavery first as a signatory to a petition of New England clergy in opposition to the Kansas-Nebraska Act issued in 1854.Wikipedia. Stevens 1855-1940 who supplied the plans and drawings illustrated here was a major innovator of the Shingle Style. He was prolific completing some 1000 commissions mostly along the Maine coast including approximately 300 homes on the Portland peninsula. In 1888 he formed a partnership with Albert Winslow Cobb who had previously worked at the Boston office of William Ralph Emerson another major innovator of the Shingle Style. Cobb who provides the text argues for the Shingle Style as a necessary reform to produce a more democratic straightforward and uniquely American style of domestic architecture. "Examples of American Domestic Architecture was nothing short of an impassioned clarion call for a new form of architecture that was aesthetically beautiful and purposely engineered to reduce the widespread social inequalities of the period. In 1843 Smith published a large map of the United States and three years later in 1846 he published the first edition of this map. Considered a really good map it basically covers the eastern and midwestern part of the U.S. California and Oregon are featured in an inset and part of Texas is also shown. Howes W 615. Brown blind-decorated cloth gilt lettering. Cloth quite faded with frayed extremities underboards exposed at corners soiling and dampstaining to rear cover a bit cocked. Modest dampstaining to upper fore-edge corner of all interior leaves present but not pronounced. All leaves firm modestly toned with little foxing evident. Former owner signature in pencil on front flyleaf. Portion of map present at rear mostly lacking showing portions of western Missouri southern Iowa and "Indian Territory" later Oklahoma to the west. Rear pastedown also contains original bookseller's tag from Chicago Book Store S. F. Gale & Co. Chicago. An important map of the U.S. first published in the 1846 edition which was updated for the editions of 1848 1849 this and 1850 then published separately in 1853 and 1853. With five insets to the general map: "Railroad & Canal Routes from Albany to Buffalo" "Map Showing the Rail Roads between the Cities of New York Boston & Albany" mostly missing in this copy "Railroad Route from New York to Philadelphia" "Railroad Route from Philadelphia to Washington" and "Map of Oregon Northern California Santa Fe &c." The latter inset first published in the 1846 edition although small is important for showing regions before the Mexican War and was copied by other map makers.
