009974Illinois State Historical Library. Hardcover. Very Good Plus. Two Volumes . Full Leather . Vol. I : Pease Theodore Calvin and James G. Randall editors The Diary Of Orville Hickman Browning 1850 - 1864 Collections Of The Illinois State Historical Library Volume XX Lincoln Series Vol. II published in 1925 . Volume II : Randall James G. editor The Diary Of Orville Hickman Browning 1865 - 1881 Collections Of The Illinois State Historical Library Volume XXII Lincoln Series Volume III published in 1933 . Browning was a close associate of Abraham Lincoln for many years in Illinois and was a member of the United states Senate throughout Lincoln's Presidency . However as this detailed diary illustrates the two men did not always agree on issues events or their assessment of people . In fact Browning initially supported Edward Bates for the Presidency in 1860 . But he then became one of Lincoln's most important organizers at the Republican Convention in Chicago where his strong oratorical skills were particularly useful . Browning spent a good deal of time in the White House with Lincoln during the War and it is clear that the two men had profound respect for each other .Browning wrote in detail and with considerable emotion in his diary . He started the diary when he was forty-three and he maintained it until a few weeks before his death . As edited by Pease and Randall the diary is more than 1250 pages and it is one of the most important primary sources on Lincoln . The detailed index at the end of Volume Two makes the material very easy to use . These two large volumes are bound in beautiful calfskin and the bindings are as new . The textblocks are in very good condition and are clean no marks of any kind except for the name of a previous owner neatly written on the second free endpaper of Volume II . Marbled endpapers and ribbon markers in each volume . The importance of the materials and the exquisite bindings make these volumes a great addition for the the library of any collector of Lincoln materials . Illinois State Historical Library hardcover
