1992SO-32Boulder CO.: Westview Press 1992. Scholarly text focuses on fertility and family transitions in selected Third World countries exploring critical aspects of the relationship between population and development. The essays examine population processes as they unfold and develop over time highlighting the need to go beyond economic explanations and identifying the priorities among social structural and cultural factors. Several of the contributors discuss the changing roles of women and the family which provides an important context for understanding demographic transitions. The book concludes with an examination of the implications of fertility and family patterns now emerging in Third World countries in the context of population planning and development policies. 283 pgs. 1942296411942. Second Printing Springfield Illinois Charles C.Thomas 1942 8° X 149 pp. 65 Abbildungen orig. Leinenband. The American Earl Calvin Padgett 1893-1946 was among the surgeons who had great difficulties in cutting grafts of uniform thickness and resonable dimensions. Like many others therfore he was looking for a dermatome which would minimize the risk of technical errors. He discussed his wishes with Professor Hood mechanical engineer who like himself was working at the University of Kansas. From 1930 on they made efforts to design a dermatome which was simple to operate and couldcut grafts of a uniform readily adjustable thickness. It was not until 1938 that a useful result was obtained. Unlike all the other dermatomes designed at that time this consisted of a semicircular drum and a blade. The distance between drum and blade was adjustable. In principle the grafts cut were the same size as the drum. The skin to be cut was cemented on to the drum and this made it superfluous to strech the skin; grafts could therefore be cut from virtually any site. The device also made it possible to cut grafts of a particular shape. The skin to be left in situ was painted with talcum and ether and consequently did not adhere to the drum and was not cut off. Grafts of any desired thicknee could be cut with this dermatome.Henk J.Klasen History of Free Skin Grafting p.153-159 unknown
