This is a defense of America against the criticisms of Captain Basil Hall and Mrs. Frances Trollope. The author 1789-1857 was a prolific journalist. He was London correspondent for the New York Observer from 1831 to 1835. He wrote political tracts for the Whig party under the name of "Junius" and edited the works of Henry Clay. This is the first edition of the collected numbers of Calvin Colton's letters written with his "Junius" pseudonymn of and contains Tracts No. I - VIII; each tract paged separately at the top and about 16 pages each but book is also continuously paged at bottom. These tracts explore Whig philosophy in relation to the political climate of the day: slavery abolition Texas annexation public lands tariffs etc. Each tract about 16 pages and cover various topics: The Test The Currency The Tariff Life of Henry clay Political Abolition Democracy Labor and Captial The Public Lands etc. Colton began his career as a Presbyterian pastor in New York in the 1820's and became an accomplished writer first writing on religious topics but later on wrote a guide for immigrants Great Lakes travel and Indians politics history and is still noted for his biographical works on Henry Clay. The original publisher's covers are salmon and printed on rather thin & fragile paper. Corners of cover chipped with some loss of text on rear cover and last two pages are chipped at lower corner with minor loss of text.
