157796188London: Imprinted by Thomas Dawson for John Harison and George Byshop 1577. First edition in English of John Calvin's commentaries on the Pauline Epistles. Octavo bound in full speckled calf with raised bands to the spine all edges red rebacked. Title within architectual woodcut border woodcut initials. In very good condition. First editions are rare. One of the earliest extant Christian documents the Pauline Epistles constitute thirteen books of the New Testament and are largely attributed to Paul the Apostle. As part of the canon of Christian theology and ethics the Epistles offer an unprecedented insight into the beliefs and controversies of early Christianity. The Pauline epistles are usually placed between the Acts of the Apostles and the general epistles in modern editions of the New Testament. Most Greek manuscripts however place the General epistles first and a few minuscules place the Pauline epistles at the end of the New Testament. French theologian and reformer John Calvin produced commentaries on most of the books of the Bible. He devoted four years in compiling his commentaries on the Pauline epistles before turning his attention to the general epistles which he dedicated to Edward of England. 2276981The Westminster Press 1964. Trade Paperback. Good. Spine creased page ridges lightly foxed pencil notes. 1964 Trade Paperback. viii 228 pp. Institutes of the Christian Religion Latin: Institutio Christianae Religionis is John Calvin's seminal work of Protestant systematic theology. Highly influential in the Western world1 and still widely read by theological students today it was published in Latin in 1536 at the same time as Henry VIII of England's Dissolution of the Monasteries and in his native French language in 1541 with the definitive editions appearing in 1559 Latin and in 1560 French. The book was written as an introductory textbook on the Protestant creed for those with some previous knowledge of theology and covered a broad range of theological topics from the doctrines of church and sacraments to justification by faith alone and Christian liberty. It vigorously attacked the teachings of those Calvin considered unorthodox particularly Roman Catholicism to which Calvin says he had been "strongly devoted" before his conversion to Protestantism. The Institutes is a highly regarded secondary reference for the system of doctrine adopted by the Reformed churches usually called Calvinism. The Westminster Press paperback books

18508913New York 1850. Hardcover. Very Good. 21 ¾ x 26 inches. Lithograph with original hand color; some fold reinforcements with some mended losses at intersections very good condition. A delicately beautiful map of mid-19th century United States with extensive transportation-related content. Four of the work's five inset maps focus on rail lines and canals in specific parts of the country. The large inset of the western United States at bottom right completes the picture of the country that is not shown in the main map. Thus all of Texas is shown on the map and the California Territory is depicted as stretching as far east as the Texas border. The map generally is very well detailed and shows stage roads in addition to railroads and canals. It has a beautifully rendered floral border in which are fine scenic vistas including of Niagara Falls and a harbor scene with ship that is powered by both steam and sail. He is appalled at his Party's impending nomination of Zachary Taylor for the presidency. Taylor a Louisiana slaveholder had never voted or participated in civil affairs. His military career most recently in the Mexican War which northern Whigs had generally opposed as an unconstitutional land-grab for slavery was his only public activity.
"He is a Military Chieftain-- and he is a Slave owner and in favor of the Extension of Slavery over new territories." Webster deserves the nomination: "Let there be no wavering none of the contemptible expediency doctrine which leads men to declare in one breath that Mr. Webster is their first choice and to say the next moment that they are ready to vote for General Taylor."
FIRST EDITION. 182310086712mo leather spine label xvi 320 pp. Binding a bit worn and hinges are tender some staining and foxing throughout; otherwise very good. Published about 50 years after the sect arrived in New York this work is an effort to set the record straight about the Shakers. In the preface the authors suggest the considerable interest in the Shakers along with the sometimes prejudiced view of these people which even included charges of drunkenness of Ann Lee and her associates was the reason for writing this book. According to them they didn't want to inspire controversy but merely to present the facts as they saw them which includes a history of this group. Sabin 79721. Packard & Van Benthuysen, books
