'A few years since this region then denominated the 'far west' was regarded as the outskirts of civilization it is now the greatest proportion of it the residence of an active enterprizing and intelligent population.' preface.</p><p>Detailed information is given on each state both geographical physical political and economic with intricate details of land and soil quality per county methods of sale of land and settlement and development possibilities. A perfect guide for the emigrant and settler. The large format map is incredibly detailed; it is coloured by counties and gives location of cities towns villages post hamlets rail and stage roads. Calvin Smith with original hand-coloring in full some light brown staining and short separations at folds. Map colors are distinct and very bright/vibrant looking beautiful and in 'As New' condition. It was clearly never displayed in a lighted area. Original brown cloth stamped with titles and decorations minor wear at a few corners and edges. An early pencil & light flowing ink pen short name to front endpaper. First published in this edition in 1850 according to the copyright page. Dated 1854 on the title page. Orig. issued 1839 this an early edition 5th overall with revised title from 1843 edition later issued as "Colton's Traveller and tourist's guide-book through the western states and territories." Howes W 615. Brown blind-decorated cloth gilt lettering. Cloth quite faded with frayed extremities underboards exposed at corners soiling and dampstaining to rear cover a bit cocked. Modest dampstaining to upper fore-edge corner of all interior leaves present but not pronounced. All leaves firm modestly toned with little foxing evident. Former owner signature in pencil on front flyleaf. Portion of map present at rear mostly lacking showing portions of western Missouri southern Iowa and "Indian Territory" later Oklahoma to the west. Rear pastedown also contains original bookseller's tag from Chicago Book Store S. F. Gale & Co. Chicago.
