Signature on title of Armand Auboyneau who had presented it to Samuel Malbone on the blank preceding title whose signature is on the endpaper with Auboyneau's that of Eliza Tweeny Malbone is on the first page of text. First American edition. French and English text on facing pages. 1 vols. 12mo. Author of "Paul and Virginia." The first book of the author's work "Arcadia" "wherein the celebrated author . . .had proposed to represent the three states of barbarity civilization and corruption through which pass successively almost every nation" Advertisement of the Translators. L'abbé de St-Pierre a commencé à en réunir les matériaux vers 1694 et en a achevé la rédaction en 1730. L'auteur considère l'histoire comme un moyen de faire connaître ses théories. Il y fait preuve d'une indépendance complète vis à vis des hommes et des événements. Les affaires politiques pures y tiennent peu de place. Quant aux guerres, il les juge en pacifiste irréductible, s'attardant plus à tout ce qui concerne le bonheur des citoyens. Dans son histoire, St Pierre fait entrer les mœurs, les habitudes et les lois. Il est à cet égard le précurseur de Voltaire. Grimm et Sabatier de Castres préféraient les Annales au Siècle de Louis XIV.- Voir Goumy, Etude sur…l'abbé de St. Pierre pp. 209 à 225 qui voit les Annales comme l'ouvrage le plus intéressant de l'auteur. Très bel exemplaire. XVIII e s.
