Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre 1737 - 1814 was a French writer and botanist who travelled between 1768 and 1771 to the Isle of Bourbon. In an attractive contemporary calf the spine carefully rebacked in brown calf with a black leather label some missing calf to boards repaired a very nice fresh copy. A translation of Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's best-known novel the love story Paul et Virginie Paris 1788 set in Mauritius made by Helen Maria Williams 1759-1829. It was neither the first nor a complete translation but Williams' English abridgement first published London 1795 was immediately successful and reprinted 10 times within the British Isles before 1801. Whilst the third edition overall it is also the first Dublin edition of this translation.
