It was the historic German financial collapse of 1923 that first brought Dr. Schacht into prominence. Nei due secoli intercorsi tra la pubblicazione dei "Principia" di Newton e l'avvento della teoria quantistica, il determinismo fu il paradigma della scienza classica; il suo dominio si estese persino alle scienze sociali, quali l'economia, la sociologia o la psicologia sperimentale, e finì con l'imporsi anche nelle scienze biologiche. La possibilità di prevedere esattamente il comportamento dei sistemi osservati, l'ideale di Laplace, divenne il contrassegno caratterizzante dell'intero discorso scientifico. Se soprattutto la meccanica quantistica ha segnato all'inizio del Novecento un momento di grave crisi nel dominio della scienza classica, le certezze della fisica e di altre scienze della natura vengono oggi messe in forse da una nuova serie di fenomeni caotici, mai osservati prima, sia per ragioni di miopia e pigrizia mentale, sia per la mancanza di strumenti adeguati, come il computer. Questi fenomeni spesso banali - come il gocciolamento di un rubinetto, l'evoluzione delle condizioni meteorologiche, la dinamica di una popolazione animale - non obbediscono al paradigma della scienza classica, pur rimanendo in una cornice deterministica. Il caos, infatti, rende impossibili le predizioni non per una sua intrinseca natura indeterministica, ma per la sua estrema sensibilità alle condizioni iniziali, che dovrebbero essere date con una precisione impossibile, fino all'ultimo decimale.
