1959419549Guatemala and Mexico 1959. Near Fine. A collection of 79 gelatin silver prints ranging in size from 7†x 7†to 8†x 10†and four smaller 5†x 4†prints by Alma Lavenson collated and housed in 11 handmade paste-paper portfolios. The collection consists of 51 prints taken in Guatemala in seven portfolios and 32 prints taken in Mexico in four portfolios. Each print is captioned by Lavenson on the versos in green ink giving place names and in her smaller hand underneath in blue ink giving additional information. All are in fine condition. Also included is a San Francisco Museum of Modern Art exhibition catalog 1984-85 Inscribed by Lavenson.<br /> <br /> This portfolio is Lavenson's first book solely devoted to her photography. A remarkable assemblage of images made by the famed California photographer of Guatemalan and Mexican women children and men including several Mayan peoples from various rural regions and towns throughout both countries. The images date from a trip Lavenson made in 1959 during which she also visited her son Albert who was conducting anthropological field research in Chiapas Mexico. <br /> <br /> Lavenson was a self-taught photographer from the Bay Area whom Edward Weston told to abandon the soft-focus style of the times and adopt the crisp style of the Modernist movement. She took the advice to with such verve that she was invited to participate in a San Francisco gallery show that featured work by Weston’s newly formed photo group f/64. The attention- getting show which also featured the work of Ansel Adams Imogen Cunningham and Consuelo Kanaga exposed her work to wide acclaim leading to three solo shows at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art inclusion in Edward Steichen’s “The Family of Man†exhibition and showings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Like many women of the time Lavenson largely set aside her career as a photographer after her marriage in 1933. Lavenson died in 1989 at age 92 just a year after her final solo exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art but today is gaining in reputation as an important photographer of the first part of the 20th Century. <br /> <br /> A detailed list follows:<br /> <br /> Guatemala 47 prints 4 small prints<br /> <br /> Portfolio 1. Beneath this is Conried’s own bookplate printed in crimson and a caricature vignette of Conried. Hans Conried is best remembered for his leading role in the classic Dr. Seuss fantasy film The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T as well as his portrayal of Uncle Tonoose on The Danny Thomas Show. This book is a 282 page biography of Barrymore and is very rare inscribed by him since it appeared just shortly before his death. Bradbound or stapled in stencil printed wrappers or stapled in self-wrappers. A few items a bit used as noted below but generally very good to fine. A substantial archive of scripts and technical documents tracing the long and troubled history of this film adaptation of Hichens's 1933 novel. According to one source Selznick had acquired the film rights to the novel prior to its publication but submission of a preliminary script in 1934 to the Breen Office resulted in assurances that it would not pass muster according to the PCA. So the project was shelved for over a decade. Two photographs with Anger's ownership stamp and label on the verso four with press stamps on the verso and three with printed mimeo snipes affixed to the versos.<br /> <br /> "Hollywood Babylon" and its sequel detailed the various improprieties both real and imagined of the elite of Hollywood's Golden Age. <br /> <br /> Archive includes:<br /> <br /> A photograph of Irish American director and actor William Desmond Taylor released for newspaper usage after his murder on February 1 1922. <br /> <br /> A photograph of actress Virginia Rappe circa 1922 released for newspaper usage after her death at the height of the Fatty Arbuckle scandal. <br /> <br /> A photograph of actress Alma Rubens released for newspaper usage after she was arrested for narcotics possession in 1931. Rubens had been arrested on similar charges in 1929 and as noted on the snipe had "taken the narcotic cure" that year. Rubens would die weeks later from lethal pneumonia and bronchitis on January 21 1931 shortly after her release from jail.<br /> <br /> A Paramount studio photograph of actors Cary Grant and Randolph Scott at a swimming pool circa 1935. The two men lived together sporadically for twelve years throughout the 1930s and early 1940s and were suspected by both Anger and contemporary sources to have been lovers.<br /> <br /> A photograph of the body of Mexican American actor and closeted homosexual Ramón Novarro being removed from his house after its discovery in 1968. Novarro was tortured and murdered by two male escorts who falsely believed a large sum of money was hidden in the actor's house. <br /> <br /> Photographs range in size from 6 x 8 inches to 8 x 10 inches. The unpaginated preliminary leaves comprise a colour ornamental title-page a photogravure portrait of C. Alma Baker and a further decorated leaf followed by single leaf listing contents and plates; then 148 continuously paginated letterpress leaves with 52 photogravure plates throughout. Boards moderately thumbed and rubbed with a few scattered spots but overall a most attractive example internally fresh and excellent with tissue guards extant. One of the most lavish and desirable books on the history of Australia and First World War aviation. This copy is an example of the superior Japon vellum binding and was also offered in more modest demure blue cloth. It lists the aeroplanes typically costing some £2700 apiece along with their donors including great Australians such as graziers Sidney Kidman and Henry White of Belltrees who both respectively paid for two aeroplanes. Some were funded collectively for example the citizens of both the Northern Territory and Far North Queensland separately raised the funds for aeroplanes. Each of the Australian gifts is illustrated in 21 fine photogravure plates.</p> <p>A more detailed account of the practical and strategic use of the Australian and Malayan gifted aeroplanes is provided in a chapter of some 30 pages by Lieutenant-Colonel Boyd Cable of the Royal Air Force. A studio rerun of a the 16 April "First Rough Draft With Dialogue from Novel" of this adaptation to the screen of Hichens' 1933 novel accompanied by a first run of the "Third Draft Script." The first draft is credited exclusively to Alfred Hitchcock and his collaborator wife Alma Reville; the third draft is identified as by James Bridie based on an adaptation by Alama Reville. According to one source Selznick had acquired the film rights to the novel prior to its publication but submission of a preliminary script in 1934 to the Breen Office resulted in assurances that it would not pass muster according to the PCA. So the project was shelved until Selznick returned to it in 1946. It is clear that at that time scripts from the 1934 effort as well as from an adaptation attempted at MGM were consulted. In December the "Final Shooting Script" was reached after interim contributions by Ben Hecht. The final shooting script is credited solely to David O. Selznick but acknowledges dependence on the adaptation by Alma Reville. Final screen credit for the screenplay fell to Selznick and neither Hecht's nor Birdie's contributions were credited. Alma Baker and a further decorated leaf followed by single leaf listing contents and plates; then 148 continuously paginated letterpress leaves with 52 photogravure plates throughout. The top edge of the pages is gilt and other edges remain uncut tissue guards extant for the plates. Scattered flecking and staining of the cloth spine moderately sunned one corner of the boards bumped yet internally fresh and excellent.
