1959419549Guatemala and Mexico 1959. Near Fine. A collection of 79 gelatin silver prints ranging in size from 7†x 7†to 8†x 10†and four smaller 5†x 4†prints by Alma Lavenson collated and housed in 11 handmade paste-paper portfolios. The collection consists of 51 prints taken in Guatemala in seven portfolios and 32 prints taken in Mexico in four portfolios. Each print is captioned by Lavenson on the versos in green ink giving place names and in her smaller hand underneath in blue ink giving additional information. All are in fine condition. Also included is a San Francisco Museum of Modern Art exhibition catalog 1984-85 Inscribed by Lavenson.<br /> <br /> This portfolio is Lavenson's first book solely devoted to her photography. A remarkable assemblage of images made by the famed California photographer of Guatemalan and Mexican women children and men including several Mayan peoples from various rural regions and towns throughout both countries. The images date from a trip Lavenson made in 1959 during which she also visited her son Albert who was conducting anthropological field research in Chiapas Mexico. <br /> <br /> Lavenson was a self-taught photographer from the Bay Area whom Edward Weston told to abandon the soft-focus style of the times and adopt the crisp style of the Modernist movement. She took the advice to with such verve that she was invited to participate in a San Francisco gallery show that featured work by Weston’s newly formed photo group f/64. The attention- getting show which also featured the work of Ansel Adams Imogen Cunningham and Consuelo Kanaga exposed her work to wide acclaim leading to three solo shows at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art inclusion in Edward Steichen’s “The Family of Man†exhibition and showings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Like many women of the time Lavenson largely set aside her career as a photographer after her marriage in 1933. Lavenson died in 1989 at age 92 just a year after her final solo exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art but today is gaining in reputation as an important photographer of the first part of the 20th Century. <br /> <br /> A detailed list follows:<br /> <br /> Guatemala 47 prints 4 small prints<br /> <br /> Portfolio 1. A collection of six Inscribed books by Alma Routsong the real name of author Isabel Miller from the library of Elizabeth Deran her partner and the motivating force in her life along with Deran’s copy of Routsong's final book published shortly before Routsong’s death in the fall of 1996. Most notable is a first edition of the self-published lesbian classic A Place for Us 1969 later published by McGraw-Hill under the title Patience and Sarah 1972 which was selected by the American Library Association as the winner of its first Gay Book Award now called the Stonewall Book Award. The group of books also contains two copies of Patience and Sarah the first hardcover edition and first French edition as well as three Naiad Press first editions: The Love of a Good Women A Dooryard Full of Flowers and the Dedication Copy of Side by Side. Inscribed and signed by actor John Barrymore to fellow actor Hans Conried presented to him five months before Barrymore’s passing: “To Hans Conried - with sincerest good wishes to a fine artist John Barrymore 9 iv ‘41.†This was John Barrymore’s own copy with his large engraved bookplate which is a striking design by Barrymore himself with his initials at the bottom showing the masks of comedy and tragedy entwined in a thorny tree with flowing banners reading: “John Barrymore - Ex Libris†beneath which is a pen and an artist’s brush. Beneath this is Conried’s own bookplate printed in crimson and a caricature vignette of Conried. Hans Conried is best remembered for his leading role in the classic Dr. Seuss fantasy film The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T as well as his portrayal of Uncle Tonoose on The Danny Thomas Show. This book is a 282 page biography of Barrymore and is very rare inscribed by him since it appeared just shortly before his death. Laid in is a special yellow printed card for the John Barrymore estate auction which “Entitles the Bearer to Seat in RESERVED SECTION at Auction of the Precious Possessions of John Barrymore - Deceased - Outstanding Star of Stage and Screen Monday and Tuesday August 24 and 25 1943 3123 West Eighth Street Los Angeles - J.J. Stated "Official Photograph - The White House / 06 jan 05" on verso measuring 8x10. Housed in custom blue cloth folder title in gilt on front cover over red morocco label. Laid in auction tag from Powell Estate Sale. Signed in black pen along bottom margin. An exceptional piece. On January 6th 2005 the Bush family celebrated the 60th wedding anniversary of former President George H.W. Bush and Barbara Bush at the White House. The black-tie affair was attended by friends and family including Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney former Secretary of State James Baker former British Prime Minister John Major Brent Scowcroft and the recipient of this photograph Alma Powell. Colin Powell 1937-2021 served as the United States Secretary of State during the George W. Bush administration the first African American to hold the post. He also served as National Security Advisor to President Ronald Reagan 1987-1989 and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993. Powell was discussed as a possible Republican presidential contender in 1996 and 2000 but he declined to run both times. He passed away in 2021 survived by his wife of nearly 60 years Alma Powell. After striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton England to New York City in April of 1912 nearly 1500 of the passenger liner's 2224 passengers perished making the event one of modern history's deadliest peacetime commercial marine disasters. Built by the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast the Titanic was the second of three Olympic-class ocean liners operated by the White Star Line and the largest ship afloat at the time she entered service. The shipwreck of the Titanic was discovered in 1985 over 70 years after the disaster during a U.S. military mission and remains on the seabed. Two photographs with Anger's ownership stamp and label on the verso four with press stamps on the verso and three with printed mimeo snipes affixed to the versos.<br /> <br /> "Hollywood Babylon" and its sequel detailed the various improprieties both real and imagined of the elite of Hollywood's Golden Age. <br /> <br /> Archive includes:<br /> <br /> A photograph of Irish American director and actor William Desmond Taylor released for newspaper usage after his murder on February 1 1922. <br /> <br /> A photograph of actress Virginia Rappe circa 1922 released for newspaper usage after her death at the height of the Fatty Arbuckle scandal. <br /> <br /> A photograph of actress Alma Rubens released for newspaper usage after she was arrested for narcotics possession in 1931. 140947859New York: Tommy Boy Records 1991. An original recording by one of the greatest hip-hop groups of all time De La Soul. Promotional-only cassette tape with a personalized answering machine message given out to record execs and other important people in the music industry. Each copy is personalized by Pos and Mace for the person who received it over a special version of "Ring Ring Ring Ha Ha Hey Hey" off of the album De La Soul is Dead. The song has answering machine-themed lyrics topical in the early '90s-- think Bruce McCullough's "Answering Machines" song that make this a fitting novelty item. This particular copy is dedicated to Jerry West owner of DJs Record Shop in Jacksonville Florida-- a prominent Black-owned business operating since the mid-1960s. <p>Cassette tape in case with b/w J-card printed on lightweight paper. Recording is approximately 30 seconds. Plays fine; mp3 file dub available with purchase. <p>An extremely scarce promo item from arguably the height of the group's artistic output. Author's second book an autobiographical novel which traces her early married life during WWII and her eventual acknowledgment and acceptance of her lesbianism. Routsong was the author of the classic lesbian novel A Place for Us which was later published as Patience and Sarah. Inscribed by Routsong at her author photo to Julie Radford: "My dear friend Julie Radford with love Thanksgiving Day 1987 from Alma." Routsong has also crossed out the name Isabel Miller under her author picture and Signed as Alma Routsong. Julie Radford succeeded Routsong in the affections of her longtime partner and muse Elizabeth Deran although they all remained good friends and neighbors. Deran was originally Routsong's partner and the longtime motivating force in her life during the time she wrote A Place for Us which was selected by the American Library Association as the winner of its first Gay Book Award now called the Stonewall Book Award.
