Among her many accomplishments Willard 1787-1870 founded the first school for women's higher education in the U.S. the Troy Female Seminary in Troy New York later renamed the Emma Willard School and still in operation today as a college-prep day and boarding school. She also wrote a number of geography and history textbooks the latter of which somewhat radically for their day chronicled the achievements of women as well as men and promoted the idea that the status of women in a given society was the primary measurement of whether that society could be described as "civilized." .
