"His purpose was to remove obsolete words and those offensive to delicacy" Rumball-Petre Webster himself further stipulating "To avoid giving offense to any denomination of christian sic I have not knowingly made any alteration to the passages of the present version on which the different denominations rely for the support of their peculiar tenets" Preface p. iv. Webster further explains that the purpose of his revisions is to make the language clearer and purer so as to not "divert the mind from the matter to the language of the scriptures and thus in a degree frustrate the purpose of giving instruction" Preface p. xvi.<br>Â Â Â Â Webster considered his work on the revision of the Bible more important than that on the dictionary and was sorely disappointed at the Bible's poor reception among all levels of readers.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: 19th-century ownership signatures of Luther P. With two examples of embroidered Berlin wool work laid in one with initals "SAB Oct. 29 1859" and the other an alter scene. Royal 8vo. Sophia Augusta Brown's Bible Wife of John Carter Brown. The bible of Sophia Augusta Brown 1825-1909 wife of John Carter Brown herself an active bibliophile who helped her husband build his library and oversaw its stewardship after his death. Sophia Augusta was 34 and John Carter Brown 61 when they married after a brief courtship on June 23 1859. That event is recorded in the family record between the Old and New Testaments as are the births and marriages of the couple's three children--John Nicholas Brown Harold Brown and Sophia Augusta--the marriages of the two sons and the death of John Carter Brown "dearly loved Husband & Father" on June 10 1874. The younger Sophia Augusta Brown married banker and businessman William Watts Sherman 1842-1912 whose Newport RI house is an architectural landmark.<br/><br/>The daughter of Patrick Browne an Anglo-Irish jurist and member of Her Majesty's Council of the Bahamas and Harriet Thayer of Providence a direct descendant of Roger Williams Sophia Augusta Brown was "an indomitable force in an era when women were discovering a role for themselves in the charitable sector . For Sophia Augusta perpetuating her husband's mission through the sound management and enhancement of his collection was her way of contributing to the advancement of knowledge and understanding among peoples . From her sons' earliest age Sophia Augusta ensured they would develop an appreciation for the care condition and housing of books . John Nicholas and Harold often accompanied their mother to booksellers and private collectors. At an early age they were shown priceless works: a Columbus letter the papers of Leonardo daVinci a note by Galileo . On his trips to Europe as an adult John Nicholas was expected to report back . with his assessment of the books he encountered . When he turned 22 in 1883 Sophia Augusta entrusted him with the care of the library" Sylvia Brown Grappling with Legacy: Rhode Island's Brown Family and the American Philanthropic Impulse 2017. While her husband was still alive Sophia Augusta oversaw the construction in 1862 of the fireproof library wing in the Nightingale-Brown House which remained the site of the library until it was relocated to its current home at Brown University at the impetus of John Nicholas Brown's will. Ink stamp of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions Library on front pastedown verso of titlepage and final text page. Scattered foxing and age toning. Very good in original condition. In a half morocco box. The first joint publication of the Old and New Testaments as an entity in the Hawaiian language printed for the American Bible Society at the Mission Presses in Oahu Old Testament and Honolulu New Testament. A number of printings of various books or groups of books of the Bible were printed as early as 1827 and the first Hawaiian printing of the New Testament appeared in 1835 with the Old Testament following in 1838. These printings are frequently found bound together although issued separately. This is the first publication of the complete approved text as an entity paginated continuously and issued as one book. The New Testament has its own titlepage p.1129 and imprint. The verso of the first titlepage bears the words "Ka lua o ke pai ana" the second printing referring to the only other printing of the entire Old Testament in 1838 at the same press. A second printing of the entire Bible was made later in 1843; but curiously enough Judd et al record no other complete printing of the Bible in the Hawaiian language through 1899. <br> <br> A handsome copy of an important Hawaiian Bible in a Hawaiian binding. Brooke Gilpin 1853-1929 was vice president of the National Wholesale Drug Association and commodore of the Baltimore Yacht Club Maryland. He married Hattie Newcomer 1861-1942 daughter of Benjamin F. First edition of this Bible volume I only; folio 14" x 13" 164 leaves embossed in the New York Point Alphabet for the Blind which is a system of tactile raised dots similar to Braille. Contemporary 3/4 calf over tan cloth covered boards spine ruled in gilt; spine label is absent. New York Point for the Blind was invented by William Bell Wait 1839-1916 educator for the Blind as an alternative to the "Line Letter" system consisting of raised letters of the standard alphabet which was in use in the late 19th Century and lasted for several decades. But Braille had been invented by Louis Braille in 1824 but fell into disuse only to be revived in the early 20th Century and Braille remains today the standard in reading and writing for the Blind throughout the world. Internally quite clean with the embossed dots in very good condition; small loss at head of spine and corners worn through; a very good copy now quite scarce on the market. <br/><br/> American Bible Society hardcover books

Contemporary calf raised bands gilt burgundy morocco label. Moderate wear and spotting to boards corners bumped spine rubbed right edge of spine label chipped. Light foxing and toning throughout occasional light tidelines no text affected a few stray pen marks. Map expertly conserved with a long vertical tear mended and with a slight bit of loss in the lower edge just coming across the neat line. Titlepage creased and chipped. Two-inch closed tear to lower margin of leaf X1 no loss of text possibly a paper flaw one- inch closed tear to right margin of leaf AAAAAA3 no text affected long closed tear to middle of leaf FFF2 neatly repaired no loss of text New Testament titlepage torn with some paper loss but no loss of text filled with archival paper two-inch closed tear to right margin of leaf CCCCC2 no loss of text. MMMMM gathering repeated. A good unsophisticated copy. The first Bible printed in Vermont illustrated with eight plates and a map. Copies with the map and full complement of plates are most uncommon. Printed by John Cunningham and published in Windsor by Merrifield and Cochran who sold the volume both wholesale and retail "at the sign of the Bible" the edition was also to be sold in Worcester Boston Walpole and Middlebury. The eight plates produced in a simple style O'Callaghan describes them as "exceedingly coarse" were engraved specifically for this edition and all are labelled as belonging to the first Vermont edition. They include: "Elijah Raising the Widow's Son" "The Holy Family" "St. Matthew" "St. Mark" "Jesus of Nazareth Which was Crucified: He is Risen; He is Not Here" "St. Luke" "St. John the Evangelist" and "St. Paul." Seven were engraved by Isaac Eddy 1777-1847 of Weathersfield Vt. and one by James Hill "Jesus of Nazareth". O'Callaghan and Hills call for seven plates total six by Eddy and one by Hill but McCorison calls for eight as found here. The anonymous "A Map of Palestine Describing the Travels of Jesus Christ" is not called for in any of the bibliographies cited. However according to a notice in the Windsor newspaper THE WASHINGTONIAN dated August 31 1812 Merrifield & Cochran published three versions of this Bible: without plates $5.00 with 8 plates $5.50 or with 8 plates and map $5.75. Contents following the New Testament include: Family Record blank four- page form; A Clergyman's Address to Married Persons at the Altar; Chronological Index of the Years and Times from Adam unto Christ; Summary History of the Bible; An Index to the Holy Bible; An Alphabetical Table of the Proper Names in the Old and New Testaments together with the Meaning or Signification of these Words in their Original Languages; Table of Weights and Measures Mentioned in Scripture; Table of Money; A Table of Kindred and Affinity Wherein Whosoever are Related are Forbidden in Scripture and by our Laws to Marry Together; and A Table of Time. <br> <br> A good copy of the first Bible printed in Vermont complete with illustrations produced by local artists and a map not found in all copies. Variously given as Chahta Chactas Chato Tchakta Chocktaw or Chactaw Choctaw is a language of the Muskogean family spoken by Native Americans who originally lived in parts of Mississippi Alabama and Louisiana before being relocated to Oklahoma. This translation was done by two Presbyterian missionaries the Revs. Alfred Wright and Cyrus Byington; the Book of a Thousand Tongues says that they were "substantially assisted by Joseph Dukes and W.H. McKinney educated Choctaws."<br>Â Â Â Â The Rev. Wright 17881853 spent over 30 years among the Choctaw people in Mississippi and Oklahoma. Goeb emigrated from Germany in 1804 settling in western Pennsylvania and establishing himself as a printer first in Chambersburg and later in Somerset in far western Pennsylvania. Extensively annotated in ink holograph 3 ½ pages on blank endleaves being the record of Thomas de Grey's family births marriages and deaths; he is the second son of Lord Walsingham "a clergyman married Elizabeth Fourth Daughter of the Hon.ble. Brownlow North Bishop of Winchester on the 12th of August 1802 by Special Licence at the Private Chapel at Winchester House Chelsea. . . " Very good. WITH A DOUBLE FORE-EDGE PAINTING of Philadelphia in 1790 and New York in 1820. The scene of Philadelphia shows churches buildings a harbor and shipping scene; on the reverse edge showing "New York" has various harbor buildings. Not signed; likely painted just prior to Leamington's owning this volume thus ca. 1953. The artist is not known. Often an American bookstore would import a volume acquired from an artist or a British bookstore. Provenance: W. H. Battie-Wrightson Cusworth Yorkshire. William Wrightson 1752-1827 of Cusworth Hall Doncaster Yorkshire was a former member of Parliament 1784-1790; his son of the same name lived 1789-1879; it is unclear which person's bookplate the name refers. Brownlow North 1741-1820 former owner family member was appointed Bishop of Winchester in 1781. DNB. More recently a pencil note within the book indicates it was purchased from Leamington Book Shop July 1953. A bookseller's clipped catalogue description appears to be that of Leamington's Price: £18 10s. ca. 1953. A later pencil note 12/98 indicates this book was priced in December 1998 at $1600. Slight wear.<br/> <br/>A fine copy of the first edition of the first Bible printed in the state of Connecticut complete with the separate title page for the New Testament.<br/> <br/>On October 18 1809 an announcement in the "Connecticut Courant" now known as the Hartford Courant read: "Hudson and Goodwin have the satisfaction to announce to the public that they have this day completed their first edition of the School Bible. The type is entirely new imported at heavy expense.and the paper is so good a quality that it is asserted with confidence to be the best of the kind offered for sale in this country." Henry Hudson a partner in the Hudson and Goodwin publishing firm which was also the publisher of the Connecticut Courant was the secretary of the newly-formed Connecticut Bible Society at the time. At the encouragement of the society Hudson and Goodwin published this Bible which they referred to as the School Bible.<br/> <br/>Hills The English Bible in America 168. Second edition after the first of 1844. The text is entirely in Ojibwa Chippewa and was translated by the Rev. Henry Blatchford himself a native Ojibwa Indian. 1817FF2408Cambridge:: Printed by J. Smith 1817 1816. 1817. 2 volumes. Small 12mo. iv 600; 601-821 1 2; 250 2 pp. Original crimson blind- and gilt-stamped straight grained morocco all edges gilt. Within slip-case bound in red cloth gilt-stamped back "Foredge Paintings" likely the box dates from the time of the fore-edge painting. With two lovely fore-edge paintings painted on the fanned edges; not labeled but the scenes are of British churches. Provenance: Carnegie Book Shop New York Dec 14 1965 - sold to: Roland S. Bond Dallas TX. Probably this is the Louis H. Silver d.1963 Chicago copy sold at Parke-Bernet Galleries Nov. 16 1965 sold to Carnegie Book Shop NY. The volume was described as "one vol. bound in 2 which was an oversight as the 2nd title is deep within the second vol. Silver was a lawyer engineer and Chicago hotel owner Gold Coast Hotels who was a trustee of the Newberry Library. The bulk of his collection was purchased through his agent the noted bookseller John F. Fleming and brought a reported NY Times May 15 1964 price of 2.75 million dollars. / The University of Texas Ransom Center reports: "In June of 1963 Silver was diagnosed with terminal cancer and enlisted Fleming's help in selling his substantial library. Silver had very specific demands for the sale—his library was to be sold en bloc and he should receive no less than $2.2 million for it. Fleming made contact with several auction houses but on October 27 1963 Silver died before any action towards a sale could be completed. Silver's estate represented by Clarence A. Beutel and Silver's wife Amy wanted the search for a buyer to continue according to Silver's specifications. / On November 15 1963 the University of Texas at Austin expressed interest in the collection. Fleming began negotiations with Dr. Harry Ransom Chancellor of the University of Texas at Austin. Within a month Ransom had $2.75 million in cash for the sale. Silver's estate though was feeling hesitant about the sale. The first problem was that they did not want to pay Fleming his $200000 commission. The second was that they felt pressured to keep the Silver Library in Illinois by selling it to the Newberry Library instead. In the end that is what the estate chose to do. On May 13 1964 the Newberry Library bought the Silver Library for $2.75 million. / Under Illinois law Fleming as a property broker should have earned his commission when he produced a ready willing and able buyer. There is no requirement that a sale with that buyer must occur. Since Fleming produced his buyer he requested his commission. When the Silver estate refused Fleming filed a lawsuit in Illinois on August 6 1964. The estate was granted summary judgment and the case was dismissed. The court found that since many of the books were damaged and the University of Texas did not examine the books prior to agreeing to buy them it would not have actually been willing to commit to the sale. Fleming appealed to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. In John F. Fleming Incorporated v. Beutel 395 F.2d 21 the appellate court remanded the case after finding that the lower court was incorrect in granting summary judgment. The appellate court ruled that when one was dealing with older books some damage was par for the course and so the buyer would have been willing to go through with the sale. However rather than continue the court battle Fleming settled out of court for $92000 on December 17 1968. / The Newberry Library took possession of the Silver Library and against Silver's wishes discarded one third of the books as surplus and auctioned them." The decorations and initials were drawn and engraved by Henry Shaw who also supervised the engravings of the illustrations after Leonardo da Vinci Titian Raphael and other Italian masters; engravers involved with the project included F. Anderson James Cooper Messrs. Dalziel W.T. Green William Linton and many others all of whom labored mightily in this attempt to reproduce the feel of a 16th-century production.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Signed reddish-brown morocco binding by Root & Son with covers and spine gilt extra; extremely wide and handsome turn-ins elaborately gilt tooled.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Front fly-leaf with attractively inked gift inscription to the Rev. With four fore-edge paintings found on these two volumes each painted as a split-double fore-edge painted scenes. THE BIBLICAL SCENES shown are: Moses and the parting of the Red Sea; Noah's ark shown with the animals assembling to enter the vessel; Baby Jesus with Mary two men two horses with an angel facing the baby in the center; the crucifixion march with Jesus bearing the weight of his cross. 181817093Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd 1818. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. 108pp. Publishers original drab brown cloth; upper board blocked in gilt with title within a floral design. Ink name on front pastedown. Cloth soiled binding lightly shaken gilt rubbed else a very good copy. The date of publication is taken from the Advertisement page 4. This seems to be the first Oliver and Boyd printing of a hieroglyphic Bible and the second Edinburgh printing after the Doig and Sterling edition of 1814. The accepted publicaton date for this Bible is 1818; three other known copies are known to have been issued either in quarter leather and marbled paper boards or in printed card covers. Our copy is in what is clearly publisher's cloth with gilt blocked on the upper board. This combination is unknown before 1826. It is likely then that the textblock while printed earlier was bound after 1826. Exceedingly scarce. Protected in a custom clamshell box. Oliver & Boyd hardcover books
188031077Lipsiae: Ex officina Bernhardi Tauchnitz 1880. 8vo 22.4 cm 8.8". 1 f. 82 pp.; manuscript notes bound in. <br><br>This "textum masoreticum" book of psalms i.e. the traditional Hebrew text was edited by masoretic scholar Seligman Baer 182597 and theologian Franz Delitzsch 181390 as part of their Masoretic Bible series published by Tauchnitz between 1869 and 1895. A truly => unique copy this particular volume is thickly interleaved with variously sized sheets and tabs containing the fastidious manuscript notes of published author => Walter Robert Betteridge D.D. 18631916 a notable faculty member in the Old Testament Department of the Rochester Theological Seminary who swathed page after page in minute inked marginalia and added yet more bulk with clippings from related texts annotated of course.<br>Â Â Â Â Among the doctor's publications was an article on "The Accuracy of the Authorized Version of the Old Testament" 1911 including the Hebrew psalms.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Donated by Mrs. Betteridge to the seminary library with institutional bookplate noting this on rear pastedown. Recent black moiré silk spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label. Ex-library with bookplate on rear pastedown as above pressure-stamp on title-page call number in lower margin of second leaf; paper brittle dust- or sometimes soot-soiled at edges and prone to chipping.
