Housed in the original 'Bagster' ivory watered silk lined full vellum case with single gilt clasp stamped "Bagster". Covers decoratively stamped in gilt with onlays of red green and blue morocco. Spine with similar morocco onlays and red morocco label lettered in gilt. Small 1 38 inch split to top of front hinge vellum a little dusty otherwise near fine.<br/><br/>This charming little binding was presented to the wife of The Reverend The Honourable Baptist Wriothesley Noel 1798-1873. On 17 October 1826 Noel married Jane Baillie of Dochfour whose distinguished family was descended from John de Balliol founder of Balliol College Oxford. <br/><br/>We have seen several 'Bagster Bibles' in similar purple velvet bindings over the years - if they had a case it was a rather plain purple morocco - BUT - we have never seen a decorated vellum case as shown here.<br/><br/>Samuel Bagster 1772-1852 was educated at Northampton under the Rev. John Ryland and after serving an apprenticeship with William Otridge commenced business as a general bookseller on 19 April 1794 in the Strand where he remained until 1816. A few years before he left the rarity and consequent costliness of all 'Polyglot Bibles' gave him the idea of supplying a convenient and inexpensive edition. In 1816 Bagster brought out "The English version of the Polyglot Bible" with a preface by T. Chevalier in foolscap octavo size containing a selection of over 60000 parallel references mainly selected and all verified by himself. The book was extremely successful. Believed to have been printed in an edition of 1200 copies of which slightly over one-tenth are known to have survived. Christoph Saur was a native of Wittgenstein Germany who settled in Germantown Pennsylvania and practiced medicine before turning to printing. Terminal flyleaf with elaborately penned inscription: "Isaac Sharpe flourishes dono Patris 1719." On the rear pastedown is Sharpe's early "Coll. Mag." bookplate dated April 4 1683 - possibly the date of his matriculation at Magdalene College Cambridge. The Greek N.T. starts at the beginning of the volume and the Hebrew O.T. at the end with the Greek Apocrypha of 128 pages between them. Each Testament has its own title page and the mention of the Apocrypha on both suggests that it was intended to form an appendix to either of the Testaments if they were issued separately. Title printed in red and black with small woodcut of St. Jerome repeated three times in the text with JeromeÃs prefaces within a four-part woodcut border showing God the Father and two angels in a tympanum the six days of Creation and the Last Supper. Large six-part Creation woodcut at the beginning of Genesis half-page woodcut of King Solomon at the beginning of Proverbs full-page Nativity woodcut at the beginning of the New Testament and 121 small text woodcuts including twenty-three repetitions: ninety-one Old Testament woodcuts within strip borders including eight repetitions and thirty New Testament woodcuts without borders including fifteen repetitions. Decorative woodcut initials. The Eusebian canons leaves D1-D3 are printed in red and black in a red architectural framework. Contemporary pigskin over wooden boards roll-tooled in blind to a panel design. Lacking clasps. Original index tabs. Binding worn with some loss of pigskin on upper corner of front cover. Title soiled lower margin of first few leaves wormed and frayed with some loss to woodcut title border a few short marginal tears some mostly marginal dampstaining minor worming to lower inner margins a few inkstains slight discoloration throughout. Despite these minor flaws this is a beautiful example of a French woodcut Bible completely unsophisticated. Contemporary ink inscription on back pastedown dated 1534 contemporary ink inscription on the recto of D4 beneath the Nativity cut eighteenth- or nineteenth-century inscription on title: B.V. Maria in F¸rstenfeld. Some early underlining and coloring of woodcuts in red. A few early ink marginalia. Housed in a custom quarter brown morocco clamshell case. The illustrations follow the schema of the Sacon Bibles printed in Lyons in 1518 and 1521. CrespinÃs blocks with the exception of the Creation are close copies of those used in Jacques and Jean MareschalÃs Lyons Bibles of 1523-1541 as is the layout of the text within ruled columns. Contemporary/original mottled calf spines gilt and gilt-lettered. A bit dry and worn but quite sound. § A lovely quarto edition of the Bible in Latin and French also issued in 8vo -- this is much the more preferable version. The plates and maps are outstanding and the physical feat of printing all seventeen volumes in 6 years is astonishing. Complete sets in commerce are surprisingly scarce though widely held by institutions. Contains the Psalms arranged in kathismata then two other sections follow. Printed in Old Slavonic in red and black throughout. The colophon states that Psalter is based on the 17th century work of Patriarch Joseph of Moscow. It was published by Protodeacon Anisim with the blessing of Old Believer Bishop Innocent in the summer of 1922. Innocent Usov Ivan Griforievich 1879-1942 was a publisher the founder of the Old Believer Herald and a fierce opposer of the Bolsheviks. In the early 1920's he became Metropolitan of Chisinau now in Moldava. This is well a well worn copy with some early repairs. The leather clasps have perished along with the spine tips. The final leaf is semi-detached. There are no free endpapers; perhaps there never were. Overall only a good copy of a scarce Orthodox Old Believer Psalter printed in the early years of the Soviet era. Protodeacon Anisim hardcover books

A scarce Portuguese New York imprint comprising the Catholic New Testament. The translator Antonio Pereira de Figueiredo was a Portuguese monk who completed his vernacular Bible over the course of eighteen years during the late-18th century. His New Testament was originally published in parts from 1778 to 1781. The publication of this edition in New York by the American Bible Society perhaps correlates to the growth of Portuguese immigration to the Northeast associated with the rise of the American whaling industry during this period. books

With an imitation Gryphius woodcut device printed in reverse on title. We could only locate 3 copies at libraries Cambridge Madrid and Copenhagen. No other copy besides this present copy has been at auction in the past 50 years. Early 19th-century mottled sheep. Boards tooled in gilt. Spine stamped in gilt. With red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Board edges tooled in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Some minor dampstaining mainly to lower blank margin of preliminaries. Signature G is toned. Leaves O3 and O4 with marginal paper repair not affecting text. Final leaf is toned and has a near invisible paper repair not affecting text. Overall a very good copy. "A native of Burgos educated at Louvain and Wittenberg Francisco de Enzinas 1518-52 was a humanist scholar and Protestant convert who produced the first Spanish version of the New Testament printed in 1543 in Antwerp. He formed a partnership with the Strassburg printer Augustin Fries to publish Spanish translations of Greek classics and the remainder of the Bible of which he was only able to complete Psalms Ecclesiasticus Job and Proverbs before his death. Baudrier VIII 241 not having seen or located a copy citing Brunet supplement II 712" "Even before the complete edition of Castellio's Latin Bible appeared Enzinas who had already produced a Spanish Bible New Testament in Antewerp in 1543 had translated the Psalter the Wisdom of Solomon Jesus Sirach present copy and the book of Job into Spanish. All of these appeared with the false address 'En Leon en casa de Sebastian Grypho' though they were in fact his translations from manuscript versions of Castellio's edition. Enzinas continued to work on his translations until his death on 30 December 1552. He had planned to have his Spanish Bible printed in Geneva but this fortunately for Calvin never came to pass." The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English preceding the King James Version by 51 years. It was the primary Bible of 16th-century English Protestantism and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare and Oliver Cromwell. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower. This version of the Bible is significant because for the very first time a mechanically printed mass-produced Bible was made available directly to the general public which came with a variety of scriptural study guides and aids collectively called an apparatus which included verse citations that allow the reader to cross-reference one verse with numerous relevant verses in the rest of the Bible introductions to each book of the Bible that acted to summarize all of the material that each book would cover maps tables woodcut illustrations and indices. The annotations which are an important part of the Geneva Bible were Calvinist and Puritan in character and as such they were disliked by the ruling pro-government Anglicans of the Church of England as well as King James I who commissioned the "Authorized Version" or King James Bible in order to replace it.
