155539566Basileae: per Ioannem Oporinum colophon: 1555. 8vo 15.9 cm 6.25". 16 341 7 pp. Sole edition of these Greek paraphrased psalms done by Paul Dolscius while he was serving as a rector in Halle. Melanchthon was a great supporter of Dolscius 152689 whose translation work was so proficient that at one point his authorial byline on the Greek translation of the Augsburg Confession was assumed to be merely a pseudonym for the great reformer himself. Â Â Â Â The text here is simply printed with the Latin preface in roman and the main text in Greek using single columns; a 5-line decorative initial and a 7-line inhabited one showing two kings in profile complete the work. This is now an uncommon edition with searches of Worldcat COPAC USTC and NUC Pre-1956 revealing only three U.S. institutions reporting ownership. Â Â Â Â Provenance: An inked ownership stamp of notable 19th-century English bibliomaniac Richard Heber 17741833 reading "Bibliotheca Heberiana" appears on the front free endpaper; Thomas Frognall Dibdin added this stamp to select rare books in Heber's collection following the collector's death. 191341439in Arabic: Beirut: The American Printing Press 1913. 8vo 18.5 cm 7.5" 920 295 pp. The Van Dyck translation of the Bible into Arabic first appeared in 1865 and remained the standard version used by Arabs for a century. This edition from the American Printing Press is => an all-Arabic production with the only English appearing in it being a small-print line "Bible Third Font 282" on the title-page at "rear". Â Â Â Â Cornelius Van Alen Van Dyck 181895 was born at Kinderhook NY and educated at Jefferson Medical College Philadelphia receiving his M.D. in 1839. The following year the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions sent him to Lebanon as a medical missionary for the Dutch Reformed Church and he remained in the Middle East for the rest of his life with only an occasional trip to the U.S. Â Â Â Â Van Dyck became fluent in Arabic wrote extensively in that language and taught medicine and other subjects: "He was professor of pathology and internal medicine in the medical school of the newly founded Syrian Protestant College which later became the American University of Beirut. He also taught astronomy in its literary section directed its observatory and meteorological station as well as the mission press and edited its weekly journal al-Nashran. He wrote Arabic textbooks on chemistry internal medicine physical diagnosis and astronomy publishing some of them at his own expense" Wikipedia. Publisher's brown cloth spine stamped in gilt with title in Arabic and with blind stamping to covers and spine; some chipping to cloth around spine and at edges. As often this copy lacks several preliminary and terminal leaves but the scriptures are complete. Woodcut illustrations include Solomon's temple a map situating the garden of Eden another detailing the Israelites' forty years wandering in the desert a large illustration of the Vision of Ezekiel a nearly full-page woodcut of the temple and city of Jerusalem restored and a map of the holy land on the verso of the New Testament title-page. Large thick quarto Bible. "Kimber and Sharpless Stereotype Edition" stated on title-page. No date stated. O'Callaghan says that "The first edition of this Bible was printed in 1823. The stereotype plates of the Old Testament were cast by Elihu White of New York; those of the New by B. & J. Collins. Kimber and Sharpless continued the publication of large and numerous editions until 1844 when they sold the plates to Jasper Harding." Â Â Â Â Contents include general title-page a note to the reader order of books contents of the Old and New Testaments Old Testament New Testament title-page New Testament Index and Tables Psalms of David and "A Brief Concordance to the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments." by John Brown. Evidence of two leaves of family records between the Old and New Testaments having been torn out. Most of the pages of John Brown's Concordance are waterstained in margins. Red silk bookmark laid in. One of the Phinneys' series of stereotyped quarto Bibles of which 138 editions were published between August 1822 and winter 1848. The Phinney brothers Henry and Elihu carried on the business their father Elihu Phinney had started in 1795; the elder Phinney had established a press bookshop and newspaper after resettling in Cooperstown from Connecticut. James Fenimore Cooper a delegate to the 1816 convention that formed the American Bible Society learned to set type in his shop for fun Hills 69. The younger Phinneys however were not to be restricted to one shop: They sold their stock which consisted of their own publications together with books brought in from Philadelphia and New York from large travelling wagons and established a "bookboat" on the Erie Canal that enabled them to reach a larger portion of western New York. Â Â Â Â This edition has the Apocrypha added and 11 woodcut plates in total; the New Testament has a separate title-page. The family record leaves here are mostly unused but bear a few names with dates from 1845 through 1899. Uniquely bound in earlier 19th century polished calf over beveled wooden boards ornately tooled in blind and gilt inner gilt dentelles marbled endpapers all edges red margins trimmed close just entering some headlines or side notes some light marginal soiling very minor worming in blank lower margins of a few leaves in front and middle of book. A very attractive copy from the library of William Otter Gibbs with his bookplate: Gibbs was a 2nd Lieut. 7th Hussars February and Lieut. November 1900. In the South African Boer War served 1901-2 with 7th Hussars in operations in Cape Colony Orange River Colony and Transvaal; awarded Queen's Medal with five clasps. Captain Ap. 1907. Seconded to be Brigade Major of Eastern Mounted Brigade Territorial March 1913-March 1916.
