RARE German translation of a novel on the figure of Samson, one of the last of the judges of the ancient Israelites mentioned in the Old Testament. The author - Ze'ev Jabotinsky (born Vladimir Yevgenyevich Zhabotinsky 1880-1940) was an eminent Russian Jewish Revisionist Zionist leader, author, poet, orator and soldier, who founded the Jewish Self-Defense Organization in Odessa, and co-founded with Joseph Trumpeldor the Jewish Legion of the British army in WWI. Later he also established several militant Jewish organizations in Palestine, including Beitar, HaTzohar and the Irgun (Etzel). This novel, considered a precursor of Thomas Mann's "Joseph and his Brothers", was published in the original Russian in 1927, and immediately translated into German. 205x130mm. 382 pages [+2]. The Christian Saints of Turkey is an introductory guide to people, places, events, and texts of the early church of Asia Minor (modern Turkey). The time frame of the book is more functional than academic, it begins with the New Testament and ends in 1453. The book's layout is unique and userfriendly. It contains 300 short descriptive "profiles" that are listed numerically (1 to 300), with no chapters. The numbering system allows for crossreferencing within the individual "profiles." The book also includes two table of contents, one chronological and the other geographical. The goal of the book is help people worldwide not only discover that Turkey is the land of the Bible, but it is also the primary and central land of the early church. There is no other book of its kind available today.
Date of 1832 and name J. Brown in gilt at base of spine. One of the full page engravings, 'Abel Murdered by His Brother Cain' has a horizontal tear across the middle. Cover extremities worn. All engravings have browning and foxing to margins and text pages though generally clear have some with varying degrees of foxing and browning. The Family register page lists a number of members of the Born or Borne family. Frontispiece and title page engravings hand coloured. Heavy book weighs 7.7kgs so extra cost for posting to countries other than UK.
