These texts include theologically-focused historical accounts hymns prayers proverbs parables didactic letters erotica poetry and prophecies. The Old Testament is the first section of the two-part Christian biblical canon; the second section is the New Testament. The Old Testament includes the books of the Hebrew Bible Tanakh or protocanon and in various Christian denominations also includes deuterocanonical books. Orthodox Christians Catholics and Protestants use different canons which differ with respect to the texts that are included in the Old Testament. The New Testament is the second division of the Christian biblical canon. The New Testament discusses the teachings and person of Jesus as well as events in first-century Christianity. 006098LONDON AND NEW YORK: CASSELL PETTER AND GALPIN. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Poor/No Jacket. GUSTAVE DORE. THE HOLY BIBLE CONTAINING OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS ACCORDING TO THE AUTHORISED VERSION WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY GUSTAVE DORE published CASSELL PETTER AND GALPIN LONDON AND NEW YORK FULL MOROCCO 1867 This 2 volume set of the Gustave Dore-illustrated Holy Bible is identified on p239 of Dan Malan's bibliography as the 2 Volume first edition set. This is the first non-parts edition published concurrently with the parts edition which came out between 1866-70. It is copiously illustrated with 238 original illustrations as called for. Burnished marbled endpapers all edges in lustrous gilt. The condition of the binding is Poor with the boards heavily rubbed and lightly marked and the front board and backstrip are separated but still attached at the rear board. The condition of the pages is very good with very clean slightly mellowed pages throughout some light foxing and some chipped pages to volume II. This book includes The Apocrypha. The first engraving of Ezekiel Prophesying is torn and the list of engravings is ragged. Nevertheless the Gustave Dore Bible is a highly collectable work and the engravings sell individually for a very good price. This is potentially a restoration / rebinding project or a breaker for the print collector or salesperson. The illustrations were highly influential on how biblical imagery was presented afterwards and inspired Cecil B De Mille's film of The Bible. Dore's highly evocative images with heightened emotion are highly prized and this bible was one of the milestones in Victorian illustration.

CASSELL PETTER AND GALPIN hardcover
