Including the Apocrypha Book of Common Prayer and Sternhold & Hopkins' Metrical Psalms. Scriptural text complete but lacking the front endpaper first two leaves of the BCP and final metrical psalms following 119. With an early rebacking along with the metalwork. Clasps and tail 1' of the rear strip of brass perished; moderate weart to the extremities with some abrasion of the leather at the extremities revealing the oaken boards with antique patina. both boards show splitting from the application of the furniture and oxidation to the boards and adjacent leaves around the rivets; occasional tidemarks and some thumbsoil to the margins otherwise VERY GOOD. With numerous ownership inscriptions to the endpapers title versos and elsewhere. An uncommon survival in contemporary binding. Darlow & Moule 285 one of some 30 odd Barker printings of the 1580 edition with trivial modifications William Whittingham was one of many Puritan scholars who landed in Calvin's Geneva as exiles from eligious persecution under Queen Mary. Trained in classical languages at Oxford Whittingham completed a fresh translation of the New Testament from the original Greek in 1557. Joined by Anthony Gilby and Thomas Sampson a translation of the Old Testament from the original Hebrew and Aramaic was completed in 1560. The three saw their work as a continuance of the tradition of English Bible translation first begun by William Tyndale and Miles Coverdale. Given permission to print in England by Queen Elizabeth the Geneva Bible became the dominant translation in England for three generations before and after the King James Version. 4to in 8's. This is the last edition of the four great Polyglots following that of Alcalá 1514-1517 in four languages Antwerp 1569-1573 in five and Paris 1628-1645 in seven. It's the most extensive edition of the great Polyglot Bible the London Polyglot or the Walton Polyglot after the compiler Brian Walton 1600-1661. According to Brunet this edition ""is the most sought after being more complete and correct than the others and containing nine different languages"" with Ethiopian and Persian added to the seven languages of the Paris Polyglot. So it includes the text of the Bible in 9 different languages: Hebrew Samaritan Aramaic Greek Latin Ethiopic Syriac Arabic and Persian. All of the texts that are not in Latin are accompanied by Latin translations and all are arranged side by side or one over another on the two pages open before the reader. The first three volumes contain the Old Testament. They give the Hebrew text with the Samaritan Pentateuch the Latin Vulgate the Greek Septuagint the Aramaic Targum and the Syriac and Arabic paraphrases. The fourth part contains the Apocrypha and the Triplex Targum i.e. Targumim I and II of Jerusalem and the Persian version of Jacob ben Joseph Tawus. The fifth volume is devoted to the New Testament printed in Greek Latin Syriac Arabic and Ethiopian. Finally the last section contains the critical apparatus. Volume 1 is illustrated with multiple engravings in the text a portrait of Brian Walton a frontispiece 2 plans a map and 3 engravings all double-page except 1 plan. An extra volume by Brian Walton the Apparatus contains parts of the Polyglot such as codices chronologies proverbs and Holy Land details. Vol. 1 missing blank leaf after pp. 865. Spines restored portrait and title print frayed with creases some browning and staining. A copy of the second edition without the reference to Cromwell's protectorate in the preface. It does not contain the dedicated epistle to King Charles II but does contain the one mentioned by Brunet at the beginning of the first volume p. 48. 1617496301London: Edward Griffin for Henry Fetherstone 1617. . This 1617 combined edition in a single volume has two sequences of pages running to page 728 and page 312. This copy lacks several title pages both of the book as a whole and of individual treatises and also lacks 10 pages of text scattered across three locations. The front board and first page of epistle dedicatory are detached from the rest of the book; this board has a mended corner. The paper is in remarkably good condition throughout apart from a few tears especially considering that the book is over 400 years old - if only some of our modern books were printed on paper as durable as this! Joseph Hall Bishop of Norwich was a Calvinistic Anglican and an English representative at the Synod of Dordt. He held some evangelical and puritan principles but was not part of the Puritan movement. First edition of this verse translation of the Song of Songs by Joseph Stennett 1663-1713 the first important Baptist hymnwriter in England: "Thy Lips my Spouse that move with skill / Drops like the Hony-comb distil. / Hony and Milk's beneath thy Tongue / Which feeds the Weak as well as strong." In his scholarly preface Stennett is quick to assure readers that the Hebrew text is not about sexual desire despite appearances: "some have denied that Solomon wrote it by Divine Inspiration; and make his Design to be only that of celebrating his Amours with Pharoah's Daughter or some other person." The passion of the bridegroom and the bride is to be understood however as a divine allegory of Christ's love for his church the same "mystical Espousals" found in the 45th Psalm which Stennett also translates here. Wing B2633AC ESTC R212810. We locate four institutional holdings in North America Emory Huntington NYPL and the American Baptist Historical Society; ESTC adds Harvard but that appears to be an error. Folio finely bound in full morocco gilt with printed title page and preface by the New York bookseller Charles Hamilton probably early 1960s where he attests that the text is from the 'He' version taken from an error in Ruth III.15 corrected to 'she' shortly after and thus much more desirable. Fine. 104 leaves 208 pp. from the most famous book in the English language. The 1611 King James Apocrypha contained the following books: 1 Esdras 2 Esdras Tobit Judith Additions to Esther Wisdom of Solomon Ecclesiasticus Baruch Letter of Jeremiah Prayer of Azariah Susanna Bel and the Dragon Prayer of Manasseh 1 Maccabees and 2 Maccabees. Permerne er begge forsynet med talrige mindre stifter med store hoveder i messing til beskyttelse af permerne ved opslag. 2 lukkestroppe med blanke messingbeslag hvor den lille klo på det ene er bortslidt. Bindet er antageligt fra sidste halvdel af 1600-tallet og ganske velbevaret. Blokken er noget løs, men heftesnorene, som er intakte skal fastgøres på permernes inderside, hvilket kræver noget lim og måske en fornyelse af forsatsbladene. Halvtitelblad, 2 deltitelblade. Kobberstukket titelblad, kobberstukket portræt af Christian IV. (24),353,226,157 blade (af 159 - sidste tekstblad og registerbladet mangler til Ny Testamente). Teksten med talrige træsnit. Halvtitelbladet, som næsten altid mangler, er løst og kantflosset. Et blad løs i heftningen. Enkelte blade i Fortalen med smårifter og lettere kantflossede. En del af de sidste blade i Ny Testamente med slid i ydre marginer. Enkelte blade kantforstærkede. Med talrige træsnit i teksten.

Rich, elaborate gilding to both boards and spine. The gilding is vague, especially on the front board, but the tooling is very sharp, and the binding overall is magnificent. With four beautiful, ornamented brass edges to each board and two large ornamented brass clasps. All edges are gilt and beautifully blindtooled. Wear to capitals, where the cords are loosening a bit, and with a bit of loss of leather. A bit of wear to hinges, at the cords, which are showing. But overall the binding is in splendid condition. Also internally extremely well preserved. The title-page has a tiny restored hole to lower right corner, and the first four leaves might have been inserted. They are slightly smaller at the outer margin than the other leaves. But that might also be due to restoration, as the binding has not been tampered with at any point and is completely unrestored. The text is unusually nice, clean and fresh, by far the nicest copy we have ever come across. Pasted-down front end-paper with the ownership signature and lacquered coat-of-arms seal of Severin Svanenhielm (Severin Seehusen (1664-1726) ) as well as the ownership signatures of Søren Schiøtz (1796-1863) (with names of members of his family), C. Th. Zahle and Erik Zahle. With the book plate of William Davignon (d. 1924). The brass corners carry the initials HL and are depicted in Johannes Rudbeck's Svenska Bokband I (fig. 26, p.53). The binding there is dated 1622, whereas our binding is from 1633 or right after. The brass fittings were a commercial merchandise for sale in Germany and probably also in both Sweden and Denmark. Engraved title-page as well as the engraved portrait of Christian IV, all by the royal engraver Simon the Pas. Without the half-title, which merely contains the printed words ""BIBLIA / Paa Danske"", which is almost never present. Bel exemplaire, bien relié, quelques légers frottements sur les plats, très légère plissure à un coin du vol. I, petit accroc à la pièce de titre du vol. II, tache sur les plats du vol. VII, petites usures aux coins du vol. VIII. Ex-libris gravé par Jacques Nicolas Tardieu filius (1716-1791) sur chaque contre plat, aux armes de René Pucelle, dit l'abbé Pucelle (1655-1745), abbé commandataire de Corbigny, conseiller clerc au parlement de Paris, neveu par sa mère du maréchal de Catinat, exilé par le Régent en 1732 à la suite de l'affaire des convulsionnaires et de ses positions jansénistes.
