First edition of this Bible volume I only; folio 14" x 13" 164 leaves embossed in the New York Point Alphabet for the Blind which is a system of tactile raised dots similar to Braille. Contemporary 3/4 calf over tan cloth covered boards spine ruled in gilt; spine label is absent. New York Point for the Blind was invented by William Bell Wait 1839-1916 educator for the Blind as an alternative to the "Line Letter" system consisting of raised letters of the standard alphabet which was in use in the late 19th Century and lasted for several decades. But Braille had been invented by Louis Braille in 1824 but fell into disuse only to be revived in the early 20th Century and Braille remains today the standard in reading and writing for the Blind throughout the world. Saur's family immigrated to Pennsylvania from Westphalia in 1724. Saur and his father advocated for Quaker causes via their printing activities in Pennsylvania. Saur was in charge of the bindery and of English language publications at his father's business. After his father's death Saur II continued to publish their newspaper their almanacs and their religious books bibles and hymnals etc. In 1773 Saur the II established a paper mill on the Schuylkill River which would greatly increase his wealth and standing in British America. However because of his later reluctance to participate in the American Revolution due to his Quaker beliefs Saur would have his house and properties sold off and died poor. This is the first Bible printed in any European language in the Continental United States. The 1763 edition eliminated Saur I's postface and included a new Foreword. 2000 copies of this second edition were printed. A Fair only example with significant loss to the spine and leather on the boards exposing the gatherings and the wood of the boards; lacks the first title page the free front endpaper the foreword the table of contents and the first page of the Old Testament; leaves show some dampstains and a few tiny tears. This compact glossed Bible densely and economically printed with no break between the Old and New Testaments is enlivened by hundreds of historiated woodcut initials from woodcut alphabets designed by Guillaume Leroy who also designed the six-part full-page woodcut of the Creation. Mareschal's useful "pocket" Bibles were bestsellers this being the fourth of six octavo editions from his press. They were among the first Bible editions to include a rhyming mnemonic Biblical summary by the minorite friar Franciscus Gothi in which each four-line verse summarizes a Biblical chapter. Occupying here the final two quires and called for in the colophon it is not recorded by Baudrier or Gültlingen. Possibly buyers had the choice of including it or not in their copies. Otherwise the text of Mareschal's octavo Bibles follows that of the Bible printed in Basel in 1509 by Johann Petri and Froben using the text edited by the Dominican Alberto Castellano and supplying for the first time marginal notes citing canon law. The apparatus includes four tables and a glossary of Hebrew names. As in the Petri editions a six-line commendatory poem by Matthias Sambucellus is printed on the title here with the first word of the last line incorrectly given as "Omne" instead of "Omine."The publisher Simon Vincent belonged to Lyon's powerful booksellers' guild the Compagnie des Libraires whose members helped Mareschal during his early years impressed by his skill conscientiousness and sobriety "a rare trait among printers of this period" notes Baudrier qualities which contrasted markedly with those of the printer Michel Topie whose press Mareschal had acquired in 1512 Baudrier 11:383.USTC 145003; Adams B-997; Pettegree & Walsby French Vernacular Books III: 57271. In the early 18th century this volume was in the collection of Gallus Winckelmann 16951757 a Benedictine monk and scholar active at Banz Abbey in Bavaria; his note on AA1: Coemit ad usum F. Gallus Winckellmann Professus Banthensis. The early-19th century signature of Daniel Kendig on front endpaper above perhaps an earlier inscription noting Lyras commentaries. Then in England the front pastedown with the mid-19th century bookplate of Joseph M. Lybrand rector of Saint Pauls Church Camden and America with the early-20th century labels of the Philadelphia Divinity School their bookplate and perforated stamp formerly collection number 4436. <br/><br/>This volume is part three of four in the second Koberger edition of the Bible printed in Nuremberg in 148687; parts one through three were undated with the fourth part dated 3 December 1487. This second edition was preceded by bible set printed by Anton Koberger in 1485. It was a monumental production incorporating the biblical commentary of medieval Franciscan scholar Nicholas de Lyra 12701349 with the additions of Paul of Burgos ca. 13511435 and responses to the latter by Matthias Doering d. 1469 as well as the commentary of William the Breton ca. 11651225 on the Prologues of Jerome. Part 3 of the set contained the books of the Major and Minor Prophets along with the books of the Lamentations and Maccabees. Nicholas de Lyras biblical gloss or Postilla encouraged much scholarly discourse throughout the Middle Ages and was frequently reprinted into the 16th century. This edition includes the famous woodcut of Ezekiels Vision and the various views and implements of Solomons Temple which were first printed by Koberger in 1481 with the complete commentary. The first Protestant Bible in Latin edited by Johan Rüdel Rudelius printed in Cologne by Peter Quentel or Quentell and notable for the wood engraved illustrations by Anton Woensam Anton von Worms particularly those at the head of each of the four gospels. Matthew faces an angle who is touching his stylus; a lion is seated beside Mark; a bull with Luke; and an eagle stands beside John.<br/><br/>Quentel was the printer of Tyndale's quarto Cologne English New Testament known from a single surviving fragment in the Grenville Collection where this same illustration to Matthew appears. It is a reasonable inference that each of the four gospels would have carried an illustration. The project which had "'got as far as the letter K' the signature that would have taken the work well into Mark" ODNB was unfinished at the time of Tyndale's flight from Cologne in 1525. Quentel's print shop was raided but sheets of the first gospel translated from the original Greek and printed in English soon began to circulate in England. Tyndale settled in Worms where Schöffer completed an octavo printing of the first complete English New Testament in 1526 a facsimile of the Grenville fragment and its illustration were published in 1871.<br/><br/>The blocks for the illustrations evidently survived the raid on the Quentel's shop and are used here at the head of each of the four gospels.<br/><br/>A notable edition in the history of the printing of the Bible. Later bookplate partly removed of Dr. Herman Blum historian of Philadelphia who established the The Blumhaven Library for his valuable collection. <br/><br/>Fifth edition of the Jean Frellon Latin Bible printed by Claude de Huchin in Lyon in 1567 immediately following an edition made the previous year; though it seems Claude de Huchin produced just these two editions for Jean Frellon. Claude de Huchin produced a Biblia Sacra for Antoine Vincent also in the year 1567 while Jean Frellon issued a sixth edition in 1568 seemingly on his own. This fifth Frellon edition resembles the former editions but has maps and other illustrations which were not in previous versions. As early as 1553 woodcut illustrations adorned Frellons editions of the New Testament. This is a rare edition of the Biblia Sacra oft overlooked and not found in the usual references. OCLC locates two copies at Universitatsbibliothek at Heidelberg OCLC no. 315584645 and Columbia University OCLC no. 83326666. The edition is recorded in French Books III & IV 2011: No. 57420. These bibles were all the rage in 16th century Lyonnais print houses; most editions issued one right after the other; for example there is an illustrated Latin Bible printed by Guliel Rovilium in Lyon also in 1567. Brylinger published the only 16th century edition of Luther's Bible in Switzerland published one of the earliest Greek and Latin diglot Bibles and published a series of 8vo editions of the Bible with diglot and Greek-only text which was popular with students. Darlow & Moule makes no mention of this or any other Latin-only edition by Brylinger.<br/>Front paste-down endpaper and front free endpaper display extensive annotations in Greek and Latin presumably by Johannes Weneken. The marginal annotations provide a fascinating insight into how this book was used. In 2006 sold at Sothebys London 11 April 2006 lot 2312. <br/><br/>Fifth folio edition of the Latin Bible as Biblia Utriusque Testamenti published by Robert Estienne 15031559 in 1556 but with the original edition of the new Latin translation and commentary on the New Testament by Theodore Beza 15191605; notably this edition appeared contemporaneously with the printing of John Calvins Psalms Commentary. Theodore Beza a French Reformed Protestant theologian and Calvinist produced one Latin and four Greek-Latin editions of the New Testament in his lifetime working carefully through extant Greek manuscript sources. Estiennes great glossed Latin Bible of 1556/57 thus contained the translation of the Old Testament by Dominican philologist Sante Pagnini or Pagninus 14701536 first printed in 1528. Based on the Hebrew Pagninis text is in the center of each page and Bezas translation from the Greek is in smaller type to the side with commentary and alternate readings underneath. The Estienne-Beza Latin Bible with its copious notes and ties to Calvinist theology was of considerable importance in the early modern era. The 20 woodcut biblical illustrations were first used in an Estienne edition of the Bible printed in Paris in 1540. This copy beautifully bound in a Dutch vellum enjoyed placement in one of the finest libraries in Britain from around the mid-18th century. See also Renouard 'Estienne' p. 87; cf. Wilkin printed this tiny volume in 1727 and Adomeit notes that "copies are most commonly found with date altered in ink to 1728" as is indeed the case here "but there seems to be no difference between the copies outside of this change." In addition to the two engraved title-pages the text is illustrated with => 16 minscule engraved plates.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Full black calf gilt extra board edges and turn-ins with gilt roll.
