First edition of this Bible volume I only; folio 14" x 13" 164 leaves embossed in the New York Point Alphabet for the Blind which is a system of tactile raised dots similar to Braille. Contemporary 3/4 calf over tan cloth covered boards spine ruled in gilt; spine label is absent. New York Point for the Blind was invented by William Bell Wait 1839-1916 educator for the Blind as an alternative to the "Line Letter" system consisting of raised letters of the standard alphabet which was in use in the late 19th Century and lasted for several decades. But Braille had been invented by Louis Braille in 1824 but fell into disuse only to be revived in the early 20th Century and Braille remains today the standard in reading and writing for the Blind throughout the world. Internally quite clean with the embossed dots in very good condition; small loss at head of spine and corners worn through; a very good copy now quite scarce on the market. A thumb Bible 44 × 32 × 18 mm 254 2 blank colophon pages plus the engraved cumulative title leaf and 14 engraved plates facing pages 18 27 42 50 71 74 86 90 106 111 116 192 199 and 221 with the relevant page number in the top right corner of each plate. 'Publisher's red morocco gilt inlays of black morocco in centre of each cover with cross and initials JHS in gilt within gilt-tooled sun tooling. Elaborate gilt-tooled borders with corner pieces of intertwined arabesques. Gilt-tooled spine flat back in three compartments with egg-shaped tools in each compartment. Gilt edges' Spielmann; the binding is essentially in fine condition with the contents near-fine. Spielmann 18 recording a minor variant printed by 'Darton & Harvey Gracechurch-Street London' with 15 plates: 'Very similar to the Newbery Bible 1780 but with some alterations. The preface for example starts with the words: "It is not a very pleasant reflection" instead of "It is a melancholy reflection". The illustrations based on the same design as the Newbery Bible have been re-engraved and are much better than the Newbery ones both in quality and design'. Bondy page 34. Printed for J. The third German language Bible printed in America utilizing the same text as the 1743 edition. The 1776 edition was of just 3000 copies printed by Christopher Saur 1721-1784 the son of Christopher Saur the elder d.1758. The younger Saur inherited the business on his father's death and printed numerous German language publications. Famously known as the "Gun-Wad Bible" after the supposed use of sheets from it during the American Revolution as cartridge paper during the 1777 Battle of Germantown. It is also notable for being the first Bible printed from type cast in America. Many copies of the bible were destroyed by the British during the battle. His son Christoph Saur III was actually a Loyalist and left Philadephia with the British troops when they withdrew.
