With two examples of embroidered Berlin wool work laid in one with initals "SAB Oct. 29 1859" and the other an alter scene. Royal 8vo. Sophia Augusta Brown's Bible Wife of John Carter Brown. The bible of Sophia Augusta Brown 1825-1909 wife of John Carter Brown herself an active bibliophile who helped her husband build his library and oversaw its stewardship after his death. Sophia Augusta was 34 and John Carter Brown 61 when they married after a brief courtship on June 23 1859. That event is recorded in the family record between the Old and New Testaments as are the births and marriages of the couple's three children--John Nicholas Brown Harold Brown and Sophia Augusta--the marriages of the two sons and the death of John Carter Brown "dearly loved Husband & Father" on June 10 1874. The younger Sophia Augusta Brown married banker and businessman William Watts Sherman 1842-1912 whose Newport RI house is an architectural landmark.<br/><br/>The daughter of Patrick Browne an Anglo-Irish jurist and member of Her Majesty's Council of the Bahamas and Harriet Thayer of Providence a direct descendant of Roger Williams Sophia Augusta Brown was "an indomitable force in an era when women were discovering a role for themselves in the charitable sector . For Sophia Augusta perpetuating her husband's mission through the sound management and enhancement of his collection was her way of contributing to the advancement of knowledge and understanding among peoples . From her sons' earliest age Sophia Augusta ensured they would develop an appreciation for the care condition and housing of books . John Nicholas and Harold often accompanied their mother to booksellers and private collectors. At an early age they were shown priceless works: a Columbus letter the papers of Leonardo daVinci a note by Galileo . On his trips to Europe as an adult John Nicholas was expected to report back . with his assessment of the books he encountered . When he turned 22 in 1883 Sophia Augusta entrusted him with the care of the library" Sylvia Brown Grappling with Legacy: Rhode Island's Brown Family and the American Philanthropic Impulse 2017. While her husband was still alive Sophia Augusta oversaw the construction in 1862 of the fireproof library wing in the Nightingale-Brown House which remained the site of the library until it was relocated to its current home at Brown University at the impetus of John Nicholas Brown's will. Spine with raised bands a broad foliate gilt roll on each band second and fourth compartments gilt-lettered within rest with gilt frames. Gilt inner dentelles and board edges. Red and white silk head bands. Marbled endpapers in a stone pattern. All edges gilt.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Presentation inscription on front fly-leaves: Preston S. and Francis M. Slight wear.<br/> <br/>A fine copy of the first edition of the first Bible printed in the state of Connecticut complete with the separate title page for the New Testament.<br/> <br/>On October 18 1809 an announcement in the "Connecticut Courant" now known as the Hartford Courant read: "Hudson and Goodwin have the satisfaction to announce to the public that they have this day completed their first edition of the School Bible. The type is entirely new imported at heavy expense.and the paper is so good a quality that it is asserted with confidence to be the best of the kind offered for sale in this country." Henry Hudson a partner in the Hudson and Goodwin publishing firm which was also the publisher of the Connecticut Courant was the secretary of the newly-formed Connecticut Bible Society at the time. At the encouragement of the society Hudson and Goodwin published this Bible which they referred to as the School Bible.<br/> <br/>Hills The English Bible in America 168. In 1804 Carey first published a new edition of the quarto Bible from standing type and including the Apocrypha. A consummate promoter and bookseller Carey re-issued the Bible on a variety of paper stocks and with various numbers of engraved maps and plates over the next decade. An 1809 advertisement listed 34 variations of his "Family Bible" priced between $3.50 and $12 however none of those listed include more than 30 engraved maps and plates suggesting this issue with 50 engraved maps and plates and including the Old Testament New Testament Psalms Apocrypha and Brown's Concordance to be among the most deluxe version yet issued by Carey. We find no record of Carey's quarto bible with 50 plates as here.<br/><br/>With an early Morristown New Jersey bookseller stamp and provenance to the Mingle family of Warren County New Jersey. The Bible Society of Philadelphia founded in 1808 with Bp. William White as its first president was the first Bible society organized in the United States. It published this the first stereotype Bible printed in the U.S. from plates imported from London; the B.F.B.S. contributed £500 towards the purchase of the plates and they were admitted to the U.S. free of import duties. The initial run produced 1050 copies of the complete Bible and 750 copies of the New Testament in double columns in very small type.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Signature of Edward H. The Phinney brothers Henry and Elihu carried on the business their father Elihu Phinney had started in 1795; the elder Phinney had established a press bookshop and newspaper after resettling in Cooperstown from Connecticut. James Fenimore Cooper a delegate to the 1816 convention that formed the American Bible Society learned to set type in his shop for fun Hills 69. The younger Phinneys however were not to be restricted to one shop: They sold their stock which consisted of their own publications together with books brought in from Philadelphia and New York from large travelling wagons and established a "bookboat" on the Erie Canal that enabled them to reach a larger portion of western New York.<br>Â Â Â Â The New Testament here has a separate title-page and the volume is llustrated with 10 wood engraved plates including two frontispieces. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Hills English Bible in America 972. "His purpose was to remove obsolete words and those offensive to delicacy" Rumball-Petre Webster himself further stipulating "To avoid giving offense to any denomination of christian sic I have not knowingly made any alteration to the passages of the present version on which the different denominations rely for the support of their peculiar tenets" Preface p. iv. Webster further explains that the purpose of his revisions is to make the language clearer and purer so as to not "divert the mind from the matter to the language of the scriptures and thus in a degree frustrate the purpose of giving instruction" Preface p. xvi.<br>Â Â Â Â Webster considered his work on the revision of the Bible more important than that on the dictionary and was sorely disappointed at the Bible's poor reception among all levels of readers.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: 19th-century ownership signatures of Luther P.
