FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - TEXT PRISTINE & UNMARKED - Description: RARE "ASSOCIATION COPY" -- Inscribed Signed & Dated By Author. Inscription is to artist Archibald Ziegler. -- Author and artist Esther Lurie 1913-1998 was imprisoned in the Kovno ghetto during the Nazi occupation 1941-44 along with other Jews. As soon as she entered the ghetto in mid-1941 Lurie began to sketch views of her new world. She has left behind a detailed written testimony of her life and work during World War II. This combination of literary and visual testimony make up a "living witness". They enable us to enter deeply into her life as an artist during this period under these difficult conditions. Lurie drew everywhere in the ghetto including the various workshops. Including a pottery workshop. During her visits there Lurie got the idea of asking the Jewish potters to prepare a number of jars for her. She would use these to conceal her art works if the situation worsened. After the deportation of 26 October 1943 in which 3000 ghetto inmates were removed to forced labor camps in Estonia Lurie hid her art collection approximately 200 drawings and watercolors in the large jars she had prepared in advance. In July 1944 as the Red Army approached Lithuania the ghetto was liquidated and those remaining were transferred to concentration camps and forced labor camps in Germany. The ghetto was set on fire and the buildings were blown up and burnt to prevent those hiding from escaping. Some people were burned to death in their hiding places. Esther Lurie was sent to Stutthof concentration camp leaving her hidden works behind. After the war some of her drawings were recovered surviving with the Ältestenrat's archive. Avraham Tory succeeded in rescuing 11 sketches and watercolors and 20 of the photographs of her works. During the Eichmann trial which took place in Jerusalem in 1961 Lurie's Second World War works were exhibited as part of the testimony - giving an "official authorization" from Israel's Supreme Court to the rich documentary value of her sketches and watercolors. This is in addition to their aesthetic value as objects of art. -- Archibald Ziegler 1903-1971 was a painter portrait sculptor and teacher. He studied art at Central School of Arts and Crafts and then from 1927-30 under Sir William Rothenstein at Royal College of Art. Ziegler was an excellent draughtsman and taught drawing and painting at St. Martin's School of Art. He also taught art history at Morley College London. He gave of his time to the Workers' Educational Association in the East End of London. There were numerous exhibitions of his work in London and the provinces including Adams Gallery 1935; Leger Gallery 1938 and Ben Uri Gallery in 1950. The Ben Uri also held a retrospective in 1955 and works by Ziegler are in their permanent collection. He was an active and prominent member of the Chelsea Arts Club. --Rare Association Copy of this scarce and important work. -- with a bonus offer-- . Dvir Publishers paperback

A9781845199555Paperback / softback. New. "To this day I am unable to understand how I managed to survive against all odds." So relates the memoir of a young woman Eva Szek later Eisenkeit who survived the Nazi onslaught against Jews in her beloved city of Lublin in Poland an important centre of Jewish religion and culture. Eva recounts with compelling testimony her fearless fight not to fall into German hands and to save her family. Her experiences under German occupation her struggle to survive and her subsequent liberation is an historical account of the tragedy of a Jewish community destroyed. The memoir describes Jewish Lublin life before the war its religious institutions and charities; Polish-Jewish relations; the German bombing and invasion; the Russian escape options; the German occupation and registration of Jews; Eva's escape from the ghetto and two labour camps; her hiding in villages and farms and complex wartime relations with Poles; her negotiated freedom with Mr. X a Polish man who hid Jews for money and cannot be considered a "Righteous"; life in liberated Lublin including the first Passover celebration; meeting other survivors and trying to make a living; and Eva's postwar move to Lodz and marriage and then to a Displaced Persons DP camp in Germany. As her eighty-fifth birthday approached Eva asked her daughter Esther to take down her life story "so the whole world will know what the Germans did." A Lublin Survivor: Life is Like a Dream not only provides an extraordinarily complete and descriptive picture of life in pre-war and liberated Lublin but a first-hand account of the obliteration of its Jewish community and one individual's indomitable determination to survive against all odds. paperback
