With a portrait frontispiece. A charming cookery book for cottage living with recipes for stews soups puddings pies vegetables bread cakes and more. Including chapters on the choice of provisions modes of cooking frugality charitable cooking and cooking for the sick or young. Containing a prefatory chapter by the author's daughter and a biographical sketch. Written by Esther Copley an English religious tractarian and a prolific writer of didactic books for children. From the library of Jill Norman an editor and food writer. Norman began working at Penguin in the early 1960s and as the only woman the care of the company's cookery books fell to her. It was her responsibility to expand the cookery titles Penguin produced and thus began to publish works by Jane Grigson Claudia Roden and Alan Davidson. In particular Norman worked closely with the famed cookery writer Elizabeth David with whom she was good friends. In the original full cloth binding. Externally sound with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. A split in the cloth to the rear joint resulting in slight lifting of the spine. Minor loss to the head of the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and minor age toning to the extremities. A contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper. Good Groombridge and Sons hardcover

Rubbed surface loss to bumped corners and head of spine upper joint split. Near contemporary inked gift inscription to recto of FFEP plates a trifle browned and spotted offsetting to title. The first edition of a juvenile tale of libricide sure to make the blood of any bibliophile run cold. The chance discovery of a printer's woodblock representing the head of an elderly man leads to the reading of a manuscript account of the great-grandfather of a young group of siblings relating his time as a student at Christ's Hospital from 1725-28 alongside a collection of his poetry. It is mentioned that the young pupil spending a day in London is given the task - by a tea-dealer - of picking apart old books which have been purchased as waste paper and folding the sheets into bags. As for the manuscript poems it is agreed that they should be sent to 'the well-known friend of youth on Holborn-Hill' for publication - a thinly veiled reference to publisher William Darton. Esther Copley wrote on a variety of topics including public health the abolition of slavery and Christian instruction. THE POPLAR GROVE is an example of the latter one of many didactic books she wrote for children. It is quite scarce: we locate three holdings on OCLC only one of which is in a US American collection. 5.75'' x 3.5''. Original purple cloth binding with gilt lettering and embellishment to spine. Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard. 178 pages with 1 leaf of ads to rear collated complete. Contemporary owner initials to contents page. Illustrated on each page of text with charming woodcuts -- drawn by Charles Christian Nahl and engraved by Durbin Van Vleck. An interesting 3-page introduction by the poet's father G. M. Bourne known at the time as a hydriatic physician gives a determined critique of harsh discipline in schools and a plea for more "Phrenological" ones. Tissue-guard present at half-title.
