192015410New York: A.L. Burt Company. Fair. c.1920. 1st Edition. Hardcover. pictorial cover; no dust jacket well-used book heavily worn at edges fraying to cloth in numerous spots soiling to page edges etc.; the binding is intact although the front hinge is a bit weakened; non-authorial gift inscription on front endpaper. B&W frontispiece Juvenile baseball fiction about a young fellow who has a natural talent for walloping the horsehide but has some struggles with getting his head right about the importance of an education. There's a great scene in Chapter VI about a third of the way into the book in which Pop Murray a veteran ballplayer himself and young Pep's coach and mentor hauls out a book called "Lives and Records of Famous Baseball Players" and proceeds to demonstrate to the wavering Pep that all the really great ballplayers of the day from Christy Mathewson to Jim Thorpe were college men one and all. Ironically Babe Ruth himself gets no mention in this scene but of course he had been educated if you can call it that at a Catholic reformatory/orphanage in Baltimore. Following this Pep talk ha! the boy goes back to the fictional Wingate Academy and leads his team to victory because of course he does and also graduates from school AND is granted admission to something called the Order of the Golden Bat. His biggest trouble for the rest of the story seems to be trying to avoid violating Rule Thirteen which has something to do with unauthorized and improper visitations to a neighboring girls' school. Although the book's narrative has nothing to do with Ruth himself it's preceded by "A Brief Biographical Sketch of the Author" -- which if nothing else demonstrates that the myth-making machinery that would ultimately elevate Ruth to something like God-like status was already well in motion. It's interesting to note that it was written just before the conclusion of the 1920 season -- Ruth's first with the Yankees after they purchased his contract from the Boston Red Sox -- and that its statement that "as this is written he has amassed a tremendous total of fifty-one home runs" permits us to know almost exactly when the writer's deadline was because Ruth hit his 50th and 51st homers of the season he would ultimately reach 54 then an all-time record on September 24 at the Polo Grounds against the Washington Senators. Because A.L. Burt did not generally state subsequent printings of its books it may not be possible to definitively identify this copy as a first printing although it should at least be noted that none of the books advertised in the ten pages of ads at the back of this volume all in various juvenile fiction series was published later than 1919. .
