1948106746New York: E.P. Dutton & Co. Inc 1948. First edition of Babe Ruth's autobiography. Octavo original cloth illustrated pictorial endpapers. Association copy inscribed by the author on the half-title page in the year of publication "To my good friend and Pal Dr. Richard Lewisohn From Babe Ruth 1948." Dr. Lewisohn was a surgeon who experimented with an anti-cancer drug teropterin pteroltriglutamic acid. In 1947 Dr. Lewisohn offered Ruth who had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 1946 to receive this experimental therapy. Dr. Lewisohn was very honest with Ruth about his small chances for a recovery although no formal informed consent was signed. Ruth responded bravely that he would still like to go through with the experimental treatment in order to provide the medical community with information that might help individuals in the future with the same ailment. Thus Ruth became a subject in one of the first clinical trials of an anti-cancer drug. Dr. Lewison's experimental course of teropterin injections led to a dramatic albeit short-lived improvement in Ruth. The improvement in Ruth's condition was featured in the lead story of September 11 1947 in the Wall Street Journal which reported on Dr. Lewisohn's report of the case at a medical conference. The Wall Street Journal stated that researchers might be on the verge of a cure for cancer. As a direct result of Dr. Lewisohn's treatment Ruth was able to say farewell to his fans at Yankee Stadium and attend other public functions as well do the interviews for and see the publication of this book in May of 1948. He was also attend the premiere of the film based on upon this book. Ruth passed away just a short time later on August 16 1948 before the film's public release. Signed first editions are scarce given the short time between the release of the book and Ruth's passing. Association copies such as this one are highly prized. Debs / Terre Haute Indiana / December 1924." Poems honoring socialist leader Eugene Debs by a variety of radical 20th century poets including Witter Bynner Max Eastman Charlotte Perkins Gilman Carl Sandburg Siegfried Sassoon Horace Traubel and Israel Zangwill many others. Sinclair contributed the foreword along with letters from H.G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw who states: "Clearly the White House is the only safe place for an honest man like Debs". An interesting pair of copies inscribed to Gardner 1884-1968 acclaimed stage actress and the first actress to form her own production company. <br/><br/>Moved by his circumstances and deeply influenced by his speeches she visited him in prison in 1920 bringing him an autographed photo and beginning a correspondence that would last through the mid-1920's. In a December 21 1920 letter she writes: "Let me tell you that I was surprised to find my emotional self somewhat unaffected while I listened to you talk. I know the reason now. It is the same with you as it was with Epictetus prison walls cannot confine the spirit -- the mind is ever free. So in a way I did not feel your plight as keenly as I would that of another who had little vision little intelligence little understanding about his body being so small a part of the real him that his confinement was of the physical order only." This is an early work by the artist and the first in which she has illustrated her own science-based text with eight original woodcuts each hand-numbered and signed in pencil The original eight cuts illustrate life in the Sargasso Sea "as it exists for several species of sea turtles who inhabit the weedlines" of this circle of currents in the north Atlantic Ocean . bordered by the Azores in the east and the Bahamas in the west. The woodcuts all convey the mysteries inherent in the natural phenomena and the motion implicit in the story of these turtles and the world they inhabit. Each print has a hand-lettered title above and hand-lettered text below consisting of words associated with the naturally-occurring events of the Sargasso Sea: migrate swim frenzy instinct weedline algal mats air seeds plankton tunicates etc. An elegant harbinger of things to come. Mimeo snipes on verso of both one with annotations in holograph pencil and Culver Picture stamp on verso and one with "Menningen" and graphic stamps on verso. <br/><br/>The first Black musical and one of the first all-Black films by a major Hollywood studio with arguably more depth than its predecessor Paul Sloane's "Hearts in Dixie" the first all-black Hollywood film released earlier the same year. <br/><br/>King Vidor's first talkie written by screenwriter Wanda Tuchock who started in the silent era and went on to become one of the first women to be credited as a director on a Hollywood film. <br/><br/>Although King Vidor had expressed his intent of an honest depiction of rural southern African American life the film still clearly advanced racial stereotypes of the era. "Hallelujah" had however authentically represented African American spiritual music from the period which no other film achieved.<br/><br/>Shot on location in Tennessee and Arkansas.<br/><br/>8 x 10 inches. As a reaction to domestic unrest Palmer created the General Intelligence Unit in 1919 recruiting J. Edgar Hoover to lead the new organization. During the First Red Scare 1919-1920 the "Palmer Raids" were launched which resulted in numerous suspected radicals to be rounded up and deported. During the final weeks of Wilson's time in office Palmer requested a Presidential pardon for an aging Debs whose health was deteriorating in prison; Wilson's response was "Never! This artist's book developed from a plan by Ruth Mortimer former Curator of Rare Books at Smith College for an anthology of poems using weaving and fabric arts as metaphor. The text of The Bewildering Thread contains fifteen poems selected from the work of fourteen contemporary women poets: Sandra M Gilbert Eleanor Wilner Jody Aliesan Carolyn Kizer Amy Clampitt Linda Pastan Maura Stanton Adrienne Rich Katha Pollitt Lyn Lifshin May Swenson Margaret Atwood Susan Snively and Gjertrud Schnackenberg. The poem by Emily Dickinson from which the title of the collection is taken is printed as an epigraph. This is copy No. 13 of the 50 printed. Eleanor Wilne described the book as ".contained poems about the womanly arts of the thread---spinning embroidery lacemaking weaving-the tapestries in which women spoke before the page and the public stage were open to us."
