Burnt Sienna text lettering. Dustjacket shows a little sunning and creasing to spine and flaps some rubbing but clean bright and with $1.50 price fully present at top of front flap. First edition later state of the commercial and critical success that established Sendak's talent as an illustrator and Krauss's reputation for capturing child-like lyricism. Krauss enjoyed enormous acclaim particularly in the 1950s as a writer on her own terms for her children's books that are now better known today as early "Sendak titles." Biographer Philip Nel argues that because she "treated them as equals children accepted Krauss as one of them confiding in her telling her stories or just playing while she watched. She listened wrote down what they said and used her poet's ear to select phrases that displayed a natural unrehearsed lyricism."<br /> <br /> Krauss along with her husband Crockett Johnson was a formative mentor for Sendak. While their relationship was often strained Sendak felt that "part of her fury was educating me the dumb Brooklyn kid into a more interesting human being. She was determined that I have more insight that I think higher" quoted in Nel 178-9. A nice copy of their first collaboration. 6.5'' x 5.25''. Original quarter teal cloth color pictorial paper boards. In original unclipped $1.50 color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated by Sendak on every page. Sewn binding with string is tight and booklet is square and free of major flaws other than some rubbing and small holes to front right upper corner. Copyright page has only 1952 with a note about this printing. No other softcover versions from the first printing are found - ""thanks to a number of children and teachers in the Harriet Johnson Nursery School; and special thanks to children in the Rowayton School Kindergarten and their teacher Harriet S. Sherman."" This book was the first for Sendak and Krauss and helped launch Sendak's career published 3 years before Harold and the Purple Crayon. Sendak would go on to illustrate seven additional Krauss titles. Harper & Brothers paperback

There is light wear to the spine with some bumping to top of spine there is also light bumping and wear to the outer corners of the boards. Illustrated endpapers. Clean tight text block with many cute and fun illustrations throughout. In dust jacket. Price of $1.50 at the top of the jacket. The jacket is lightly rubbed with some mild creasing and soiling. The edges and spine are lightly worn with some mild chipping to ends of spine. A lovely little book.
