Divisé en deux parties. Table des passages de l'Ecriture qui sont expliqués ou cités dans cet ouvrage, table des auteurs, table des matières par ordre alphabétique, ordre et explication des figures. Orné de 27 planches gravées hors-texte (complet) et de deux bandeaux gravés par Leclerc d'après Baquoy, et par Scotin. Bandeaux, lettrines. Très nombreuses notes explicatives en bas de chaque page. Mors du second plat fendu en partie supérieure sur 5cm et sur 1cm au premier plat avec léger manque de cuir à la coiffe, fragilité des mors en partie inférieure, coins un peu émoussés, intérieur en parfait état. Une planche a été restaurée dans un angle (restauration bien faite), ex-libris manuscrit en page de titre et annotation en page de garde masqués anciennement par un collage. Intérieur en parfait état. Les planches sont de belle qualité, grandes de marges. Planches du plus grand intérèt : Différentes formes de l'ascia (outil en forme de hache), costumes, coiffures, Bacchus, ceintures virginales, technique pour lancer des pierres énormes, différentes formes de clefs dont les Anciens se sont servis, vases de parfum, représentation du "Démon de midi" chez les Anciens. L'auteur, Dom Jacques Martin, Bénédictin érudit, est né à Fanjeaux (Haut Languedoc) en 1684, il est décédé à Paris en 1751. Il s'est particulièrement occupé de recherches sur les origines de la Gaule et des Celtes. Tous ses ouvrages sont fort estimés. Il a également découvert plusieurs opuscules de Saint-Augustin, Cf. Larousse XIXe - Barbier II, 377 - Brunet III, 1496.
