Pages are generally clean with occasional mild marginal spotting. A small piece is missing from bottom margin of the final leaf. Page 492 is a bit soiled. Bound in brown library buckram; title and shelf number in gilt on the spine; pocket on inside front cover. Hermann Witsius 1636-1708 was a Dutch theologian and a professor of divinity at Franeker 1675 Utrecht 1680 and Leiden 1698. EB11. His Aegyptiaca first printed in 1683 compares the religious rites of the Jews and the Egyptians. He argues against the theory put forth by Sir John Marsham and by John Spencer that Jewish traditions were derived from Egyptian practices. This second edition has been expanded from the first. 1812051359Philadelphia: Published by Bradford and Inskeep 1812. Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. 12mo. xii 238 pages. The binding measures 7 inches tall by just about 4 1/2 inches wide. Hardcover bound in full tan leather. Binding is rubbed has bumping at corners and a small carved mark at the bottom of the rear board. The outer hinges have been reinforced with Japanese tissue. There is a red label pastedown and gilt bands. They are not raised. Endpapers are foxed. There is writing on the front/rear flyleaves and the front pastedown. "No 11" "Miss Scott Book 1878" The ink is rather heavy in some parts of the name making it hard to read. Text is toned has foxing. Some pages are chipped at the fore-edge and others show light damping. The inner hinges are secure. The corners of the text block are rounded and appear to have been trimmed that way. Text is toned and foxed and has some damp stains especially at the fore edge. Lindley Murray 1745-1826 was an American Quaker grammarian and lawyer and his was one of the most popular readers in America in the early and mid-19th century. He was born in Pennsylvania but lived for a time as a child in North Carolina until his family moved to New York in 1753. He studied law and became a successful lawyer but his interests lay in science and literature and in the 1780s he retired to England to write and to follow literary pursuits. This is a commentary on the Psalms and is NOT a Psalter. It does not contain the text of the Psalms. <br/> <br/> Published by Bradford and Inskeep hardcover

Latin text/translation of the Biblical books at one time ascribed to Solomon including Proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of Songs Wisdom of Solomon Ecclesiasticus Wisdsom of Sirach. Included are copious notes by the learned French scholar Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet 1627-1704 Bishop of Meaux tutor to the Dauphin and court preacher to Louis XIV of France. Ecclesiasticus contains parallel Latin texts of the "Sixtina versio" and the "versio Vulgata." The final section in the book "supplenda in Psalmos" supplies notes on several psalms. A small piece of paper with a note written on both sides in French and dated 1860 is loosely inserted inside the front cover.
