Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) rimane uno degli artisti più noti e insieme sconosciuti dell’arte del XX secolo. È stato un cartoonist, un disegnatore, un aforista grafico: eppure il suo nome rimane ai margini, fuori dai manuali di Storia dell’arte. Questo numero di "Riga" rinnova e ripensa il volume edito nel 2005, ampliandolo con nuovi materiali. Fra questi spiccano ventuno interviste, per la maggior parte inedite in italiano, rilasciate da Steinberg fra il 1952 e il 1993; due importanti saggi, che gettano nuova luce sulla sua vicenda artistica e biografica; una serie di scritti e disegni con cui illustratori e artisti hanno voluto rendergli omaggio. Senza voler stabilire graduatorie o classifiche, si può – si deve – parlare di Steinberg con la stessa attenzione riservata a Picasso, a Giacometti, a Warhol. Altrettanto complessa e ricca, la sua arte parla tante lingue contemporaneamente: disegno e parola, retorica e letteratura, filosofia e percezione. Steinberg è disegnatore e scrittore, sociologo e filosofo, psicologo e persino moralista. E tuttavia Steinberg è solo Steinberg: ovvero uno degli artisti più imitati, citati, riprodotti, perché all’unicità del suo segno corrisponde un’universalità di significati e di messaggi. Pubblicato in occasione della mostra "Saul Steinberg Milano New York" (Triennale Milano, 15 ottobre 2021 - 13 marzo 2022), "Steinberg A-Z" si presenta come una raccolta enciclopedica contemporanea che analizza l'opera di Saul Steinberg nei suoi molteplici aspetti, dall'architettura al disegno, dal rapporto con Milano a quello con New York, alle mappe, all'epistolario con Aldo Buzzi, agli artisti che gli furono amici e compagni come Costantino Nivola e Alexander Calder, ma anche Alberto Giacometti e Le Corbusier. Il volume restituisce uno spaccato dell'universo di Steinberg, ricostruito attraverso un racconto plurale che coinvolge 31 autori coordinati da Marco Belpoliti. Gli scritti sono raccolti in una struttura composta da 22 voci - che spaziano da "Architettura" a "Cartoons", da "Ghirigori" a "Labirinto", da "Milano" a "Romania" - suddivise in sottovoci per un totale di 139 lemmi. Il desiderio è quello di restituire una visione sfaccettata ed inedita della personalità artistica e poliedrica di Saul Steinberg, il quale ha coltivato una molteplicità di dimensioni espressive, talvolta non ancora indagate, sempre caratterizzate da una capacità comunicativa davvero straordinaria. Saul Jacobson , divenuto poi "Steinberg", nasce in Romania nel 1914 e studia per un anno filosofia presso l'università di Bucarest. Negli anni trenta pubblica i suoi disegni satirici nella rivista milanese "Bertoldo" e, poco dopo, i suoi lavori appaiono sulle riviste internazionali come "Life" e "Harper's Bazar". Le leggi razziali italiane contro gli ebrei lo costringono a emigrare negli Stati Uniti e, dal 1941, comincia a pubblicare su "The New Yorker", avviando una collaborazione destinata a durare sessant'anni e firmando novanta copertine. Fin da subito il suo lavoro grafico è riconosciuto come vera e propria forma d'arte, protagonista di mostre in importanti musei accanto ad artisti del calibro di Arshile Gorki, Isamu Noguchi e Robert Motherwell. Questo periodo costituisce l'inizio di un intenso susseguirsi di esposizioni in gallerie e nei musei più prestigiosi, mostre americane ed internazionali. La straordinaria immaginazione di Steinberg gli permette di esplorare i sistemi sociali e politici, le debolezze umane, la geografia, l'architettura, la lingua e, naturalmente, l'arte stessa. Saul Steinberg si spegne nel 1999 a New York.

The 51st (Highland) Division was one of the finest units of the regular army at the outbreak of war. Sent to France, it became a political pawn in Churchill's determination to maintain French military involvement, and despite a magnificant defensive campaign against overwhelming odds, was eventually forced to surrender to Rommel at St. Valery-en-Caux, Normandy in 1940. This long overdue account includes much veteran and eye-witness material. EXTREMELY SCARCE.

This is an about very good hardcover copy in dark blue cloth boards with title in gilt on the front cover. Very clean inside and out. Top right corners of boards worn. Internally very clean, some handling of the pages, not crisp. This was the first catalog published by the Greenwich Gallery located in Greenwich Village, on 71 Washington Place, in the area around New York University, which itself surrounds Washington Square Park. The exhibition featured paintings and sculpture by 50 American contemporary artists. Many of them immigrants from Russia or Eastern Europe, many Jewish. The gallery intended to show American modern, but representational or figurative art. They included: Milton Avery, Saul Baizerman, Isabel Bishop, Byron Browne, Charles Burchfield, David Burliuk, Doris Caesar, Jose de Creeft, Philip Evergood, William Gropper, Chaim Gross, George Grosz, Edward Hopper, Leon Kroll, Jack Levine, Jacques Lipchitz, Georgia O'Keefe, Henry Varnum Poor, Larry Rivers, Ben Shahn, the Soyer brothers Raphael, Isaac and Moses, Abraham Walkowitz, Max Weber, Andrew Wyeth and William Zorach, among many others. Sassoon's delightful parody of Masefield's early work was sparked by a chance re-reading of the latter's 'Everlasting Mercy'. Sassoon's publisher, TWH Crosland helped in the correction of the proofs, and 'Sassoon awoke as the anonymous author of a sixpenny pamphlet in cheerful orange-coloured wrappers' ('The Weald of Youth', p.124 ff). The mock-serious preface was written by Crosland and issued under his trading name of John Richmond. Sassoon sent a copy to Edmund Gosse, who handed it on to Eddie Marsh, the result being a long letter from Marsh criticizing Sassoon's poetry, to the latter's great advantage (see Keynes pp.32-33).
