"Alinsky's techniques and teachings influenced generations of community and labor organizers including the church-based group hiring a young Barack Obama to work on Chicago's South Side in the 1980s. Alinsky impressed a young Hillary Clinton who was growing up in Park Ridge at the time Alinsky was the director of the Industrial Areas Foundation in Chicago" Chicago Sun-Times. Rules for Radicals he writes is pragmatically directed at "realistic radicals. who want to change the world from what it is to what they believe it should be. At the time of its publication Jacques Maritain called Reveille for Radicals an "epoch-making" book and time has only reinforced the enduring importance of Alinsky's work. Based upon Alinsky's own experiences in Chicago's "Back of the Yards" district during the waning years of the Great Depression Reveille established a blueprint for community organizing that is still in use today. The book's influence along with its 1971 update Rules for Radicals on the current generation of American leaders including Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton has been much noted in fact Ms. Clinton's undergraduate thesis at Wellesley "An Analysis of the Alinsky Model" was an analysis and critique of Alinsky's community organizing methods. Rules for Radicals: A Pragmatic Primer for Realistic Radicals is the last book published in 1971 by activist and writer Saul D. Alinsky shortly before his death. His goal for the Rules for Radicals was to create a guide for future community organizers to use in uniting low-income communities or "Have-Nots" in order for them to gain social political legal and economic power. Within it Alinsky compiled the lessons he had learned throughout his experiences of community organizing from 1939-1971 and targeted these lessons at the current new generation of radicals. Divided into ten chapters Rules for Radicals provides 10 lessons on how a community organizer can accomplish the goal of successfully uniting people into an active organization with the power to effect change on a variety of issues. Though targeted at community organization these chapters also touch on other issues that range from ethics education communication and symbol construction to nonviolence and political philosophy. Though published for the new generation of counterculture-era organizers in 1971 Alinsky's principles have been successfully applied by numerous government labor community and congregation-based organizations and the main themes of his organizational methods that were elucidated upon in Rules for Radicals have been recurring elements in political campaigns in recent years. Perhaps quite timely. Random House hardcover books

From a posting on-line: "Legendary community organizer Saul Alinsky inspired a generation of activists and politicians with Reveille for Radicals the original handbook for social change. Alinsky writes both practically and philosophically never wavering from his belief that the American dream can only be achieved by an active democratic citizenship. First published in 1946 and updated in 1969 with a new introduction and afterword this classic volume is a bold call to action that still resonates today." From Wikipedia: "Saul David Alinsky January 30 1909 June 12 1972 was an American community organizer and writer. He is generally considered to be the founder of modern community organizing. He is often noted for his book Rules for Radicals. In the course of nearly four decades of political organizing Alinsky received much criticism but also gained praise from many public figures. His organizing skills were focused on improving the living conditions of poor communities across North America. In the 1950s he began turning his attention to improving conditions in the African-American ghettos beginning with Chicago's and later traveling to other ghettos in California Michigan New York City and a dozen other "trouble spots"."
