Confrontant les correspondances de Gerstein, les témoignages et les extraits du rapport qu'il a lui-même rédigé, l'auteur brosse le portrait d'un homme ayant pénétré dans l'enfer avec l'intention de témoigner devant le monde et d'aider les victimes. Il en révèle aussi les contradictions et les ambiguïtés. Plus qu'une biographie, ce texte examine non seulement l'attitude des bourreaux mais aussi celle des "spectateurs" que Gerstein aura essayé d'alerter par tous les moyens face à la "solution finale de la question juive", sans jamais obtenir la réaction espérée. Kurt Gerstein a inspiré Costa-Gavras pour son film, Amen". Très bon état
