19480012This is Bellow's second novel first printing of the British edition. Likely to have been a short run printing since Bellow was not well known then and post WWII austerity resulted in tight publishers budgets. It is therefore scarce in collectable condition. This copy the best we have handled sports the original dust jacket with no obvious tears sunning or marks. The only flaws are 1 a fold tear at the front jacket flap; 2 small holes in the edge of the rear jacket fold. Will happily provide photos are these flaws. Both flaws are only noticeable on close examination. The book itself is exceptionally clean tight and square. The top edge is slightly dusty and half title page has a few faint fox spots. Overall nr fine in a nr fine jacket. For a book issued in 1948 this is rare indeed. John Lehmann hardcover

Repaired 3cm. tear in upper margin Notes Saul Steinberg born Saul Jacobson in June in Romania was a cartoonist and illustrator best known for his line drawings that suggest elaborate eclectic doodlings. Steinberg studied sociology and psychology at the University of Bucharest and architecture in Milan. From 1936 to 1939 he published his cartoons in Italian magazines. Settling in New York City in 1942 Steinberg worked as a freelance artist cartoonist and illustrator mainly for The New Yorker magazine and exhibited his drawings in Paris New York City and other cities. Steinberg’s subject matter ranges from the whimsical e.g. a wicker chair overtaken by its curlicues to the satirical sinister overgrown gadgets to the philosophical a tiny figure perched on a giant question mark balanced at the edge of an abyss. Poster. 36 x 23 inches. TED was born in 1984 out of Richard Saul Wurman's observation of a powerful convergence among three fields: technology entertainment and design. The first TED which he co-founded with Harry Marks included a demo of the compact disc the e-book and cutting-edge 3D graphics from Lucasfilm while mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot demonstrated how to map coastlines using his developing theory of fractal geometry. But despite a stellar lineup the event lost money and it was six years before Wurman and Marks tried again. This time in 1990 the world was ready. The TED Conference became an annual event in Monterey California attracting a growing and influential audience from many different disciplines united by their curiosity and open-mindedness -- and also by their shared discovery of an exciting secret. Back then TED was an invitation-only event. It is not now -- you're welcome and encouraged to apply to attend. San Pedro: TED2 Conference, 1990 unknown
