As usual some leaves with browning. <br/><br/><em>First appearance of the famous issue of Acta Eruditorum in which the 4 solutions by the 4 most eminent mathematicians at the time were printed together. There were in all 5 solutions to the posed problem and Newton's solution was first printed in the Philosophical Transactions January 1697 and reprinted here. The solution proposed by L'Hopital not printed here was not published until 1988.The brachistochrone problem was posed by Johann Bernoulli in Acta Eruditorum in June 1696. He introduced the problem as follows: "I Johann Bernoulli address the most brilliant mathematicians in the world. Nothing is more attractive to intelligent people than an honest challenging problem whose possible solution will bestow fame and remain as a lasting monument. Following the example set by Pascal Fermat etc. I hope to gain the gratitude of the whole scientific community by placing before the finest mathematicians of our time a problem which will test their methods and the strength of their intellect. If someone communicates to me the solution of the proposed problem I shall publicly declare him worthy of praise." Johann Bernoulli and Leibniz deliberately tempted Newton with this problem. It is not surprising given the dispute over the calculus that Johann Bernoulli had included these words in his challenge:- ."there are fewer who are likely to solve our excellent problems aye fewer even among the very mathematicians who boast that they. have wonderfully extended its bounds by means of the golden theorems which they thought were known to no one but which in fact had long previously been published by others."According to Newton's biographer Conduitt he solved the problem in an evening after returning home from the Royal Mint. Newton: . "in the midst of the hurry of the great recoinage did not come home till four in the afternoon from the Tower very much tired but did not sleep till he had solved it which was by four in the morning."Newton send his solution to his friend Charles Montague and Montague published anonymously in the Transactions. Newton's solution presented here in the Acta is also anonymous. The episode did not please Newton as he later wrote: "I do not love to be dunned pestered and teased by foreigners about mathematical things ." After the competition Johann Bernoulli said ". my elder brother made up the fourth of these after Leibniz himself and Newton that the three great nations Germany England and France each one of their own to unite with myself in such a beautiful search all finding the same truth."Struik Edt. Vossius 1618-1689 was one of the learned Huguenots who emigrated to England where he became Canon of Windsor and had the finest private library in the world. He also provided books for Queen Christina of Sweden. This work presents the results of his research in a number of fields most notably the Classical world on which Vossius was a noted authority. These include observations on Rome Alexandria Babylon and so on as well as writers such as Virgil and Tertullian but also subjects like travel to the Indies and Japan Jews among others. Moses Maimonides Rambam was a 12th century Jewish philosopher and halachic legal scholar. A highly controversial figure both during his lifetime and after his death but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah his only work not in Arabic still carries canonical authority particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community as the codification of Talmudic law. His other work includes a commentary on the Mishnah entitled Kitab al-Siraj Kitab al-Fara'I a book on precepts and the philosophical work Dalalat al-Ha'irin known in Hebrew as the Moreh Nevukhim The Guide to the Perplexed. The major premise is an attempted philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. This work came to play a central role in all subsequent major controversies over philosophy within the Jewish community during the Middle Ages. The sole edition of a detailed account of the 'gross abuses' meted out to Quakers in Newgate Gaol Bristol by Isaac Dennis his Wife and Servants and the Cruelty they acted toward these poor Men in the west-house'. Quaker persecution in Bristol as with elsewhere in England continued in the decades after the Restoration with legislation such as the Conventicle Act designed to supress nonconformist worship and reimpose Anglican uniformity. But the election of the high Tory John Knight d. 1718 as Sheriff in September 1681 led to a significant increase in the number of Quakers imprisoned there. The persecution that the Friends received in gaol which are fully evidenced and witnessed in this tract included denying visits the confiscation of worked goods brutal treatment and graphic threats of death and violence. A fair copy. Newton published this edited and revised edition of the German Bernhardus Varenius' 1622-1650 textbook on the mathematics of geography and navigation for his students at Cambridge in 1672 making this Newton's first publication mere months before the publication of the Opticks. While the English editions were much reprinted in Cambridge and then London this first German edition is scarce outside of continental Europe. Published while Newton was Luasian Professor of Mathematics of Cambridge 1669-1702 Newton's version became the standard text on the subject for over a century. This edition reproduces Newton's Latin text with copies of the plates seen in the earlier Elsevier edition of 1650. First edition of a pamphlet on the sentence of the Dutch WIC merchant Isaac Coymans 1622-1673 who was convicted in 1662 to six years imprisonment in the Jan Roodenpoortstoren in Amsterdam. In service of the Dutch West Indian Company WIC Coymans "collaborated with two members of the Amsterdam vroedschap Nicolaes Pancras and Hendrik Carloff to establish a Glückstadter Africa Company. When Coymans schemed to involve the WIC in a war with Denmark in order to benefit this new enterprise and its backers he found himself charged with treason. . His supporters in the vroedschap saved him from the death penalty; he was however condemned to six years in prison and eternal banishment" Lindemann. This edition debuted Francis Bacon"s utopian novel "New Atlantis" tucked away toward the end of the book. Also included for the first time "The History of Natural and Experimental of Life and Death or of the Prolongation of Life." Includes also "an Alphabetical Table of the Principal Things contained in the Ten Centuries." Rebound calf with five raised bands on spine and title in gilt. Very good condition. Light rubbing to edges and one two-inch strip of heavier rubbing along spine. Some leather shedding at this place. Binding is solid. Engraved portrait is present and in fine condition as is the engraved pictorial title on facing page. Some pages have light spotting but the spotting doesn't obscure the text or dominate the page in any way. Most pages are clear and unspotted. The paper is very lightly tanned. It has a crinkle as the pages are turned which is very nice. Overall an excellent copy. From the library of noted California mathematician Charles Greenhall with his ownership signature penciled on the first endpage. On the second endpage there are two inked signatures that look of an era as the book: I Newton and B. Newton. Isaac Newton's signature looks different from this one. Ownership inscription of Henry Williamson to flyleaf crossed out price of 10s 6d to endpapers and further ownership inscription of Gasparis Delahoyde surgeon dated 1747. One of Vossius’s ‘more scientific tracts. which attracted considerable attention among his contemporaries’ ODNB: he sought to explain the motion of the tides a question of increasing interest with reference to the heat of the sun exclusively instead of the stars the moon or other forces. At the end he also discusses the use of a mercury barometer for predicting storms at sea. The following decade the text was translated into English to help it reach a wider audience. Isaac Chauncy 1632-1712 congregationalist minister the son of early Harvard President and Puritan Charles Chauncy 1592-1671. Emigrating to New England with his father aged five Isaac returned from New England in the early 1650s after studying both theology and medicine at Harvard to complete his studies at Oxford. His position in the Church of England was short-lived; presented with the living of Woodborough by Oliver Cromwell he was swiftly ejected by the 1662 Act of Uniformity. The remainder of his life was spent leading dissenting congregations at Andover and later St. Mary Axe where he was succeeded by Isaac Watts and publishing a wealth of non-conformist texts and replies.
