The maskilim (followers of the Haskalah) tried to assimilate into European society in dress, language, manners and loyalty to the ruling power. brossura La storia di Newton è fatta per sorprendere: bambino gracile e malato, sopravvisse a quasi tutti i suoi coetanei; ragazzo destinato a fare il contadino, diventò un sommo scienziato; giovane di umili origini, entrato come servo all'Università di Cambridge, diventò il suo più illustre professore, oltre a essere eletto presidente della Royal Society, direttore della Zecca di Stato e membro del Parlamento. Lo scienziato, sulla scia di Galileo, riuscì a sconvolgere a un tempo la matematica, la fisica e l'astronomia. Eppure Newton non fu (come spesso si crede) un eroe della razionalità ma piuttosto, come disse John Keynes, "l'ultimo dei maghi". Uno spirito inquieto, bruciato da una curiosità quasi maniacale che spaziava dalla scienza, alla religione, all'alchimia.
