Contemporary paneled calf expertly rebacked to style gilt lettering piece. Occasional touch of mild foxing else a fine crisp amply-margined copy. First edition of this remarkable collection modeled on a work of Hugo Grotius with the same title including the transcription of an epistolary debate between the Dutch theologian Phillip van Limborch 1633-1712 and the Jewish scholar Isaac Orobio de Castro ca.1617-1687. Jonathan Israel views the work as "a key exemplum of the new 'enlightened' method of upholding Christianity." Limborch was a leading Dutch theologian aligned with the Arminians and professor in the Seminary of the Remonstrants at Amsterdam. Orobio de Castro had been Professor of Theology at Salamanca who was imprisoned by the Inquisition on account of his sympathy with the Jews of Spain. He fled the country going first to France and then to Holland where he abjured Christianity and became deeply involved in the philosophico-religious controversies in the Low Countries. In the present work Limborch publishes three letters written by Orobio de Castro along with his own detailed responses. In arguing against the "truth" of the Christian religion "Orobio retorted that the advent of Christ has done nothing to render mankind less sinful or to lessen suffering that the rise of Christianity far from being unparalleled was surpassed by the expansion of Islam. and that far from being unchallengeable Christ's miracles had not been performed publicly like the miracle at Mount Sinai but virtually in secret a circumstance which renders them entirely dubious. These responses and his further claims that the New Testament is unreliable providing no basis for trust in Christ's miracles since the text exists only in Greek a language neither Jesus nor the Apostles had the slightest knowledge of. made no impact on Limborch Le Clerc or Locke who were convinced of their triumph over Orobio. Nevertheless Orobio's arguments were fully and objectively reported in the text and subsequently widely read across Europe and some of those who read it were not so sure that Orobio was 'vanquished'. Boulainvilliers who meticulously examined the text concluded that Limborch's arguments were less securely grounded on reason than he and his allies supposed and that even without their realizing it it was Orobio who won the contest a verdict echoed in other anti-Christian clandestine philosophical literature of the early eighteenth century" Israel. Edited from a manuscript formerly in the possession of the Leiden professor of theology Simon Episcopius and now in the University Library Amsterdam the Exemplar Humanae Vitae is the autobiography of the Portuguese Jew Uriel da Costa ca.1585-1640 who was excommunicated from the Sephardi Jewish community of Hamburg in 1618 after addressing a polemical broadside to the leaders of the Sephardi congregation of Venice in which he criticized rabbinic Judaism as incompatible with the Torah. He later settled in Amsterdam where he submitted to a public recantation of his views before the Portuguese Jewish congregation and committed suicide shortly thereafter. A radical freethinker who here makes an imposing plea against dogmatics da Costa may be viewed as a forerunner of Spinoza. An English translation was published at London in 1740; a complete edition of his few works was edited in 1922 by Carl Gebhardt Schriften des Uriel da Costa and published as the second volume of the Bibliotheca Spinozana. At the conclusion Limborch offers his refutation of da Costa's challenge to revealed religion. References: Bamberger no. 67. FÃ¼rst 1:17. A fairly good complete copy. Second augmented edition reprinting six of the seven dissertations from the 1645 edition and adding two new ones: Vindiciae praecedentis Dissertationes and De lotione manuum Judaica. Selections in Latin translation from Isaac Abravanel's biblical commentaries follow on a variety of topics: the longevity of the patriarchs; the state and the king's law; the miraculous stoppage of the sun in Joshua's time; the sin of David in conducting a census; the name of Moses; the types of idolatry mentioned in Sacred Scripture; and the division of the biblical books. Father and son each relied upon the works of the Portuguese Jewish philosopher exegete and statesman Isaac ben Judah Abravanel 1437-1508 a staunch opponent of the philosophical allegory exemplified in the exegetical approach of Maimonides. Abravanel's commentaries on the earlier prophets excerpts of which appear in the present work emerge in part as a response to the political difficulties he faced in the wake of the rebellion of Portuguese nobels against Joao II. "Abrabanel attributed his misfortunes to the fact that he had wasted his time in the service of an earthly ruler. He therefore decided to devote the rest of his life to religious study" Enc. Jud. 2:104. The son of the celebrated Hebraist of the same name Johann Buxtorf II 1599-1664 followed his father as professor of Hebrew at Basel in 1629. In addition to completing the elder Buxtorf's Hebrew and Aramaic lexicon Basel 1639 the younger Buxtorf edited a new Latin translation of Maimonides' Guide for the Perplexed and gained notoriety for defending the antiquity of the Hebrew vowel points against the correct view of their later date advanced in his day most effectively by Louis Cappel. The treatise on the Scoter occupies pp. 119 of the second part. This exquisite duck has been the subject of numerous and lengthy controversies The history of the scoter deserves our attention as it holds both gastronomic and theological interest. Because of the peculiar beliefs surrounding their origin these birds were considered lean meat and therefore permitted during Lent. This curious privilege arose from the fact that they appeared suddenly in countless flocks upon the waters surface and aided by a taste for the marvellous people imagined that they were born from seaweed decayed wood or shells. The poet Du Bartas echoed this notion in his Création du Monde when he celebrated this strange creature: Ainsi le vieil fragment d'une barque se change En des canards volants ô changement étrange Même corps fut jadis arbre verd puis vaisseau Naguère champignon et maintenant oyseau! It is easy to see how such a belief could reassure the most timid consciences; it thus required Pope Innocent III to issue an explicit prohibition placing the flesh of the scoter among forbidden meats. In vain did he launch his prohibitions for enthusiasts continued to eat them; and when the truth about these birds became known thanks to Graindorge and the accounts of navigators other pretexts were sought to preserve the old regulations. It was suggested that the scoters blood was cold even claimed that its fat resembled fish oil and the custom which lasted into the nineteenth century of eating scoters during Lent was extended to other waterfowl such as brant geese coots and teal which were conveniently confused with the species sanctioned by the councils. Also containing a description of Greenland and an account of whaling including an unsigned illustration of a beached sperm whale with new illustrations by Christoffel van Sichem IV 1642-1693. It is a Dutch translation of La Peyrère's 1647 Relation du Groenland 1647 via the somewhat abbreviated German translation published in Hulsius's 1650 collection which contains the additional description of Spitsbergen and a discourse on whaling. La Peyrère included revised versions of Jens Munk's account of his voyage to Hudson Bay originally published in Navigatio septentrionalis 1624 and the accounts of voyages by Martin Frobisher and Godske Lindenau. A fair copy. Newton published this edited and revised edition of the German Bernhardus Varenius' 1622-1650 textbook on the mathematics of geography and navigation for his students at Cambridge in 1672 making this Newton's first publication mere months before the publication of the Opticks. While the English editions were much reprinted in Cambridge and then London this first German edition is scarce outside of continental Europe. Published while Newton was Luasian Professor of Mathematics of Cambridge 1669-1702 Newton's version became the standard text on the subject for over a century. This edition reproduces Newton's Latin text with copies of the plates seen in the earlier Elsevier edition of 1650.
