Exploration of Chile and Argentina in journal form. Isaac G. Strain 1821-1857 was a explorer and naval officer who as a midshipman served in the West Indies and off the Brazilian coast. In 1843 he organized an expedition to the interior of Brazil with funding from the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia was later assigned to patrol the waters off the west coast of Mexico during the Mexican War and still seeking further explorations finally received permission to go ashore in Valparaiso where he proceeded across the continent to Buenos Aires recording in this work his observations of the nearly year-long journey. He later served on the Mexican Boundary Commission and led a harrowing exploration of the Isthmus of Darien in search of a canal route. See DAB XVIII p.122. Only one copy seen at auction in over half a century at Sotheby's Alberto Dodero sale in 1961. Provenance: Inscribed by the author to Edward B.
