After opening his first studio in Syracuse New York he returned to California where he eventually established the "Taber Gallery" at No. 12 Montgomery Street in 1871. His business was quite successful with a stock of over 30000 Western views though many were the unacknowledged works of others. When the San Francisco earthquake led to the destruction of his vast collection his business folded. This image is not at Berkeley nor on Calisphere but is similar to "The Capitol Sacramento Cal. B 2369" at Berkeleyexcept this image is taken closer to the entrance with people in the distance at the steps and provides a more powerful view. Taber unknown books

185720123Good. 1857. Hardcover. A gift inscription on the first leaf of this notebook indicates it was given by Isaiah Winslow Ayer to his wife Jane Morton Ayer in October 1857 in Boston Mass. Isaiah Ayer was an Allopathic physician a Harvard grad and within three years would be thrust into the Army's attempt to thwart a northern insurrection. After the war Ayer wrote a book about his experiences: "The Great North-western Conspiracy." This book interesting Notebook contains engravings and illustrations taken from Graham's Magazine Sartain's Magazine Peterson's Magazine etc.on every other page. There are a couple of color illustrations as well. There is a blank leaf between each illustration for the owner to write on. Jan Ayer recorded several poems and hymns in this book in ink; two are dedicated to children that she lost when they were still young: Florence and Clarence. Ayer moved to Chicago and then Grand Rapids MI after the war. It is bound in full black leather all edges are gilt and there are gilt spine and cover decorations; raised spine bands and spine title in gilt: The Liesure Hour. Most pages are free of foxing there is some marginal smudging to som pages; many of the tissues protecting the illustrations are torn. The outer front joint is split but the inner binding is holding the front cover; it would benefit from rebacking. It could be handled as is if done very carefully.
