First edition or this printing containing the 4-page "Note to Reader" dated "Philadelphia 9th Month 1779". 12mo in original plain full calf hubbed spine. 256 pp. Good only. Rubbing to the binding and rounded corners 3" split to the lower spine. Water stain to the two blank front endpapers; top edge of the title page is torn away where it evidently bore an ownership signature some embrowning and foxing to the text. John Churchman 1705-1775 was a traveling Quaker minister who lived in Nottingham Chester County in eastern Pennsylvania. "An Account of the Gospel Labours." is an autobiographical account of his life and ministry in that area. The importance of the work is less that of a religious tract than of descriptions of American life before the Revolution and with Churchman's interactions with the local Native Americans. Copyright page states 1858 and title page states 1859. Despite this difference at 1859 edition is considered the first edition.
