This book was deemed to be dangerous and was banned by proclamation of the Privy Council of Scotland in 1666 which also ordered that a copy be publicly burnt on the high Street of Edinburgh near to the Mercat-Cross by the hand of the Hang-man and was re-banned again in August 1688. JOHN BROWN OF WAMPHRAY was a Church of Scotland theologian who served as the minister of the parish of Wamphray in Annandale during the mid-17th century. He removed to Wamphray to begin serving the parish at an unknown date estimates vary from 1637 until 1655 and remained in residence until 1662 when he was imprisoned and later exiled to the Netherlands for his public opposition to the royal imposition of bishops on the Church.
