A solid uniform set of the DeWolfe Fiske reprint c1885-1890 of juvenile novels written by Abbott and originally published as follows: On the Atlantic 1853 In Paris 1854 In Switzerland 1854 In London 1855 On the Rhine 1855 In Scotland 1856 In Geneva 1857 In Holland 1857 In Naples 1858 and In Rome 1858. This set is dark green cloth stamped in black and gilt and is the same as Lothrop's later cover and the one on the later Baker and Taylor books. A uiniformly aged set - spines slightly cocked with some edgewear mostly at spine head. Some covers rubbed a tad more than others. Internals toned but again uniformly so. Jacob Abbott 1803-79 an American congregational minister and educator wrote the famous Rollo series of books Rollo at Work Rollo at Play etc. to teach his young readers specific moral values and concepts. In these travel books following the picturesque and educational experiences of Rollo and his uncle in narrative form the young reader is taken along as though he were an accompanying guest a lively format which helped to account for the books' immense popularity. His wife and two of his children were tomahawked on the way. "As a powerful picture of Indian cruelty ranks next to the Rowlandson captivity narrative published in 1682." - Howes. Abbott was born in Maine and went to Bowdoin College. He was prolific as a writer making numerous books of juvenile fiction brief histories biographies and religious books for the general reader. King Richard II 1367-1400 was also deposed from the throne in 1399. His demise was at the whim of Henry IV who offered him a chance to live at first but earlier supporters of Richard tried to place him back on the throne and thus to remove that threat Henry saw that he died in prison. A native of Brookline Massachusetts he studied at Harvard and was thereafter engaged in business in New York City. He moved to Altadena California in the early 1930s and then relocated to Montgomery Pennsylvania in 1935. He illustrated two ornithological works by Leion Augustus Hausman an "Illustrated Encyclopedia of American Birds" 1944 and a "Field Book of Eastern Birds" 1946. His illustrations also appeared in various books by Marguerite Henry Gertrude Howell Hildreth Sterner St. Paul Meek Rutherford George Montgomery Charles Anthony Stephens and others.
