1854194411854. A scarce antebellum tract articulating a moderate colonizationist position at a moment of intensifying national conflict over slavery this 1854 first edition presents a Pennsylvania physician's extended argument addressed explicitly to "the white race and the free Negro of the United States." The work occupies a critical ideological middle ground between pro-slavery defenses and immediatist abolitionism advocating eventual emancipation while rejecting the feasibility of abolition within the United States on economic and social grounds. Dewees writes that abolition demands "of the master sacrifices that never will be-never can be made" instead proposing the organized removal of African Americans to Africa or other colonial destinations in the West. Such arguments align with the broader colonization movement associated with institutions like the American Colonization Society reflecting a strain of white reform thought that framed Black freedom as incompatible with multiracial democracy. The text thus provides important evidence of how racial ideology medical authority and political pragmatism intersected in the decade preceding the Civil War offering scholars insight into the persistence of colonizationist thinking even as abolitionist activism expanded.

Philadelphia: Printed for the Author by H.
