Es versucht, aus der Vergegenwärtigung seiner Arbeit Möglichkeiten der Selbstverständigung für die Philologie heute zu gewinnen. Dabei wird nicht der politische Gehalt oder irgendein Praxisbezug von Grimms Wissenschaft gesucht, sondern deren Logik rekonstruiert. Der Zusammenhang von Literaturgeschichte, Grammatik, Sprachgeschichte, Mythologie, Rechtsgeschichte und Lexikographie läßt die beiden Themen hervortreten, die die Philologie Jacob Grimms regieren: Vorgeschichte und Heimat. -- Wyss trägt zunächst die Schichten der Tradition des Grimm-Bildes der Germanistik ab; er zeigt dann, daß Grimms Neuansatz sich nicht mit dem Rückgriff auf die Wissenschaft seines Lehrers Savigny erklären läßt. In einem dritten Kapitel wird Grimms Sprachauffassung in den Zusammenhang der beginnenden historischen Linguistik gerückt und gezeigt, wie die spezifischen Fragestellungen Grimms sich herausbilden. Schließlich entwickeln das vierte und fünfte Kapitel die Themen Vorgeschichte - Geschichte und Heimat - Fremde und ihre spezifische Dialektik. -- Dabei zeigt es sich, daß Grimms Denken die in der Tradition des Historismus verfestigten Kategorien in Fluß bringt.
