In 1840 his family moved to Philadelphia. There he attended Jefferson Medical College and the University of Pennsylvania from which he received his medical degree in 1860. During the Civil War he served as assistant surgeon with the 26th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and served in Hooker's Brigade defending Washington D.C. He later transferred to the Navy serving under Admiral DuPont in the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron as Acting Assistant Surgeon in the Navy. After the war he became a pioneer in throat diseases and the founder of laryngology. Through his efforts Solis-Cohen professionalized a field earlier perceived as quackery and his education became a model for the training of head and neck surgeons. In 1866 he was the first in the United States to provide regular lectures on laryngology at the Philadelphia School of Anatomy. In 1875 he married Miriam Binswanger with whom he had eight daughters and three sons. He was a founder of the Philadelphia Polyclinic which would become the Graduate Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania and was its first professor of throat and chest diseases. Solis-Cohen also helped found the American Laryngologic Association and served as its president from 1880 to 1882. In 1892 he was the first surgeon in the United States to perform a complete laryngectomy successfully.</p><p><b>Henry M. Richards</b>1837-1873 was born in Mobile Alabama. In 1861 he was a clerk for a line of mail steamers. By his death he was the captain of a ship. He was buried in Mobile.</p><p><b>Condition</b></p><p>Fine</p> books

Jacob Brett was the younger brother of John Brett the head of the Magnetic Telegraph Company in England and one of the co-founders of Cyrus Field's Atlantic Telegraph Company. In 1850 John and Jacob Brett laid the first undersea cable between England and France. This failed after one garbled message a French fisherman cut the cable thinking it was a new variety of seaweed but in 1851 the Bretts laid a much stronger cable that remained in use for many years.</p> . unknown books

In this scarce pamphlet Cox lauds the German opposition to tyranny their love of "Constitutional government and law;" and their distrust of anarchy and disorder expressed in those annoying "Woman Rights Free Love and Abolition Conventions." Most recently such destructive "egotistical faith" has shown itself in the John Brown Invasion and in the doctrines of the Republican Party. "When Brown shoots down the citizens at the Armory he appeals to the God of the oppressed as his judge and all the Ismatics of New England and Ohio applaud the murderer as a martyr." While Andre Simon claimed this was "probably the most popular cookery book in England during the last decade of the eighteenth century" BG page 81 Maclean pushes back on this concept ". this is a bold assertion and the present compiler has no evidence to justify it." Maclean page 69. Jacob Schnebbelie first revised and expanded The Houekeeper's Instructor in 1804. A number of institutions date this printing as 1923 and we've found no supporting evidence of this nor reason to think this dating is far off the mark. The estimate of the date was not shared by experienced culinary bookseller Marian L. Gore whose bookseller ticket and pricing code are present in this volume along with a copy of her invoice for this and other works to cookery collector Walter Fillin. Her description estimates 1811. Some light soiling throughout; but generally clean and sound. Original tree calf-covered boards with corners bumped suffing and abrasions rebacked with modern calf spine with gilt-titled black spine label. Lacking frontispiece portrait as noted above; bookseller ticket of Gore to preliminary blank; bookplate of collectors Walter & Lucille Fillin; invoice of sale ladi-in. Good or better.
