His mother-in-law was the real cause of the crime for she hounded until he reluctantly married the girl although there does not seem to have been any necessity that he do so" McDade.<br>Â Â Â Â Felcone adds that soon after he met Miss Louisa Dorland "Louisa's mother was determined that her daughter would marry Harden and after encouraging them to spend nights together she forced the marriage. After several months of unhappiness Harden poisoned his wife. A scarce illustrated history of St. Louis with wonderful folding lithographs of the Merchant Exchange steam boats and a stove works factory. Contains short sketches on all manner of local retailers including furniture warehouses hotels jewelers and a Daguerrean Gallery Mr. J.J. Outley proprietor. Also describes local railroad routes. Ink stamp to top and bottom of text block. Sold as a reference copy only not as a collectible book. Sturdy black library buckram. 182 pp with 119 interleaved tissue-guarded color lithographed plates preceded before the title page by an extensive index of 8pp. "Ornithology; Or the Science of Birds" was also published by Studer in 1878. It seems as if these two volumes were intended to form a set based on what I see in other entries and descriptions but this is definitely the better-known half. Michigan senator Jacob Merritt Howard 1805-1871 who had worked closely with Lincoln in drafting and passing the Thirteenth Amendment was a strong supporter of his measures including "emergency actions during the secession crisis and advocated 'severe exemplary and speedy punishment of the rebels. He was especially vocal on all matters pertaining to the confiscation of rebel property and the emancipation of slaves. He was also one of the most forceful advocates of the 1863 Conscription Act" ANBO. His ire extended to trying for treason the Confederate leaders. In December he wanted to know why Davis had not been put on trial and now despite it being well-known that Davis did not have complicity in Lincoln's murder he declared in this resolution that Davis be "charged with the crimes of having incited the assassination of Abraham Lincoln President of the United States and with the murder of soldiers of the Unites States held a prisoners of war during the rebellion and other cruel and barbarous practices in violation of the rules and usages of civilized war." Clement C. Clay was also to be tried. It appears that Merritt's resolution never made it to the floor for a second reading as was required by law. Scarce. We could find only one in auction or dealer sales records in 1964. 1826100691<p>8vo pamphlet format blue wrappers seven engraved maps. Scattered foxing and browning heavy in some places. Some folds at edges a couple of small holes map of the United States split at center fold about half way up paper spine gone. This work was a children's atlas which contains no text and was meant to accompany Willetts Easy Grammar of Geography. The atlas shows the United States as not really going past Illinois at this point and a significant part of the Southwest is shown as part of Mexico. Much of the upper Midwest is part of what is referred to as the Missouri Territory. Even the eastern part of the U.S. indicates some territories belong to the Indians. The map of Frica shows little detail indicating very large unexplored areas. Willetts is best known for his map of New York State 1815. Rumsey 1210.</p> books

"The formation of this Association was the beginning of the great movement for the extension of suffrage and formation of a Constitution in Rhode Island. It was drawn up by Jacob Friese" Sabin quoting Bartlett. At the time more than half of the adult males were denied the vote. The suffragists intended to test whether in fact the U.S. Constitution guaranteed to every State a republican form of government. The Association in fact determined to by-pass the General Assembly and to draft and ratify a written constitution for the state. See Patrick Conley's study of the Dorr Rebellion contained in Democracy in Decline 1977. Thomas Dorr himself remained aloof from the Association until May 1841. Bookplate removed from front pastedown but with a sheet bearing John J. Jacob's signature tipped in over it; laid in is an autograph manuscript poem by Jacob with 6 quatrains titled "The Lover to his Mistress on Her Birthday" signed "J.J.J."; also laid in is a one-page A.L.s. from Jacob's grand-daughter regarding her books and a photograph of him. "This biography of Cresap was written to refute Jefferson's account in Notes on Virginia of Cresap's tendency to murder Indians especially in the famous case of the Indian Logan and his defenseless family. The immediate occasion for this . book written by the revolutionary officer late clergyman who had married Cresap's widow was the reopening of old sores by Doddridge in his then recently published Notes of 1824. According to McDade "the Reverend Jacob S. Harden poisoned his wife with arsenic after a fortuneteller had told him that she would not live long." A New York Times article at the time indicated she was dead five months after the marriage. However McDade reports that the mother-in-law was to blame for the crime since she hounded him to marry he reluctantly married her daughter. Good. <br/><br/> Bishop Colenso's work is an amalgam of "blunders of the grossest description" but is nevertheless "important and dangerous" for its "attack upon the veracity of the Bible" particularly because the source of the assault is "a high dignitary in the Christian Church." <br/> Thus the Hebrew Wood Chopper defends the Pentateuch against Bishop Colenso's calumnies. He uses the remarkable sudden and unpredicted growth of California in the preceding fifteen years to refute Colenso's attack on the Pentateuch for implausible chronology. <br/>FIRST EDITION. 1850587New Hampshire 1850. 75 x 160 mm. 3 x 6 ¼ inches. Pencil sketch on blue paper.  Includes small envelope 3 x 4 ½ inches with notation. Previous folds. Light browning at folds. Small pencil sketch of a girl in a bonnet and a man who appears to be an itinerant with patched clothes and a liquor bottle in his hand. A note on the envelope accompanying the sketch and entitled in faint pencil "N.H. Portrait Painter" is signed by E.S. Eaton who writes:  "Enclosed is a drawing made by Mr. J. Bailey Moore upon a stray slip of paper as he sat making a call at our home. I a little girl was greatly pleased and have kept and been pleased with it ever since. I remember that my dear Mother was amused at the two funny figures. E.S. Eaton". Jacob Bailey Moore was born in Candia New Hampshire in 1815 and died there in 1893. For a brief time he worked in Boston before returning to New Hampshire. During his career he spent brief stints as a journalist and as a phrenologist as well as an itinerant artist. Moore is closely identified as a member of the "Prior-Hamblen" group of early 19th portrait artists. This group's work closely follows that of William Matthew Prior 1806 -73 and Sturtevant J. Hamblen 1837-56. Their portraits have been characterized as "very flat posterlike" and were painted in oils or gouache on a variety of backings including cardboard academy board or canvas. Numerous works signed by Prior have been identified as have a few signed by Hamblen. Signed works by other members of the "Prior-Hamblen" group are quite rare. Those known to have been painted by Jacob Bailey Moore feature a flat style almost identical to that of Prior. The writer may be Ellen S. Eaton who lived in Candia on a farm with her parents Henry M. and Eliza Parker Eaton. She was born in 1846 became a school teacher and appears to have never married. Ellen's father Henry M. Eaton was selectman a number of years town clerk a representative to the state legislature two years and also town agent. He was also Captain of Candia Light Infantry. He was married a second time to Hannah G.
