At the request of the Canadian Department of Agriculture Shantz accompanied Bernard Warkentin to Manitoba in 1872-73 to assess conditions for settlement. His reports - including the present French edition - helped pave the way for the establishment of substantial Mennonite colonies in Manitoba profoundly shaping the cultural and agricultural landscape of Western Canada.
