Bound in Order of the Garter three-quarter brown leather over marbled boards gilt emblems and ruling on covers gilt lettering including date 1860 and tooling on spines; raised bands. The emblem gilt impressed with "Honi Soit Qui Mal Pense shamed be whoever thinks ill of it" the motto of the Order of the Garter. Topedges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Frontispieces. Vignette on title page. Headpiece illustrations. Red ribbon markers. Unique copy extra-illustrated with three hundred and six additional bound in engravings some of them hand-colored. OCLC lists seven editions published between 1870 and 1900 and one 2009 reprint by Athena Press Tokyo. When indicated the pages are listed at 490 without reference to a two volume edition and the number of illustrations on plates in these publications is listed with forty-eight or less. Our edition a publication with in-text illustrations plus a total of 354 plates 306 more than in any listed edition is a unique edition with added engravings and aquatints showing portraits of the British ruling class palaces and prominent buildings as well as scenic renderings of the Hyde Park and general landscapes. The plates some of them cuttings from publications compliment and illustrate the text of the facing pages. Sixteen of the plates are in color including a two-fold symbolic battle scene by Rolandson. Of the 338 b/w illustrations two are folding plates. One of the Orchestra Organ in Westminster by W. & J. Walker and one of the Temple of Concord by J. Pass. The volumes contain engravings some printed to tissue paper lithographs drawings and woodcuts several of them fit into cutout framing or pasted to art paper. Many of the portraits with facsimile signatures several in actual handwriting. Several of the artist listed in the comprised list of artworks below are represented with several works and a seizable number with scarce or without any identifiers but the reference in the descriptive text on facing pages. Some of the artwork with damp-staining or foxing and occasional offseting to facing pages. Several oversize plates folded to fit. Minor wear to binding. Copy belonging to Simon Gratz 1773-1839 with his signature and date 1817 the year after publication on the front end paper and on the title page. The signature matches examples of his signature which can be seen online at www.kaplancollection.org/item/deed-simon-gratz-to-james-duncan-and-2b696467 The book then bears the donation bookplate of another later "Simon Gratz esq" 1837-1925 who was a prominent 19th-century Philadelphia lawyer educator and civic leader. The bookplate is from Gratz College which the later Simon Gratz helped found. Nikelsburger takes on an apostate Jew Rev. Frey who is intent on converting his former coreligionists to Christianity. In his opening letter to Frey Nikelsburger does not hold back: "In your eagerness to convert the Jews to your way of thinking you make no scruples of converting and perverting the prophets by turning their words to a meaning which you conceive to be best adapted to your purpose; and in doing this you make them not only flatly contradict each other but themselves also." "For American Jews Koul Jacob seemed an appropriate answer to Frey a Jewish convert to Christianity who had resumed his missionary activities shortly after his arrival in America. It was a well-tempered but firm refutation of Frey's arguments. With 4 letterpress folding tables and numerous illustrations and figures on 16 folding plates lithographed by Guillaume Philidor van den Burggraaf Brussels. First edition of a rare Dutch technical handbook on clockmaking which was considered an important manual for the technical training of clockmakers at the time. It aimed to foster a more intuitive understanding of the concepts instead of explaining rules that students would learn at school. The work is divided into four parts: the first part treating basic mechanics the second the calculation and design of clockworks the third clock music and the fourth sundials. The whole is preceded by an introduction on the history of the profession. The work is illustrated with several technical plates and figures offering a visual explanation of the concepts described.Jacob Levi Smit ca. 1766-1826 was a master clock- and watchmaker from Groningen with more than forty years of experience. He was born in Friesland and likely learnt the profession in Leeuwarden where he worked for several years. A number of his clocks have survived. The present work is his only written publication and was intended for the students of the clockmakers school. The publishers preface tell us that Smit passed away on 1 November just as the main part of the text was being printed. A second edition appeared in 1836 and a third in 2011.With the owners stamp of M. Passenier Domburg on the half title. The spine is slightly rubbed. Several faint water stains in the margins of the plates occasional very minor foxing. The accompanying text guides the reader through these twists and turns. Original burnt orange illustrated card wrappers printed in green gold and terracotta and lettered in black. A superbly preserved example of this fragile production all but pristine rare with Worldcat Discovery listing only one copy and LHD none. For more than 700 years book designers have been pushing back the boundaries of the two-dimensional page adding flaps and rotating parts to enhance the text most often in scientific literature. But only in the nineteenth century did movable flaps became a regular feature in children’s books. In the Netherlands ‘De nieuwe rijschool’ The new riding school published in 1856 was the first movable children’s book which reached their peak in the 1870s and 1880s. Gerardus Theodorus Bom 1814-1884 was a Dutch publisher of books in Amsterdam issuing such titles as Kindervreugd 1864 Robinson Crusoë c.1865 and Kunstenmakers at work 1875. Andriessen's first books were published under the pseudonym Pieter Jacobsz. Under his own name he wrote a series of romantic stories for young people mainly derived from Dutch national history. N. B. "Erst in dieser stark vermehrten zweiten Auflage unter Bekanntgabe von vielen neuen Methoden und Erkenntnissen erhielt dieses klassische Werk den Titel "Spinale Kinderlähmung" da er den Sitz der Krankheit im Rückenmark annahm wenn er sich auch noch nicht auf Sektionsergebnisse stützen konnte. Er teilte das Leiden ein in das akute primäre und das chronische sekundäre Stadium und unterschied sehr wohl die cerebrale spastische Hemiplegie von der spinalen Lähmung die er "Paralysis infantilis spinalis" nannte. Ferner führte er sehr genaue Temperaturmessungen an den verschiedenen Körpergegenden durch und stellte dabei Unterschiede der Hautemperatur zwischen der gesunden und gelähmten Seite fest; auch das Zurückbleiben im Wachstum entging ihm nicht. Ebenso wies er schon auf das epidemische Auftreten hin ferner auf die Kontrakturen und die anderen Fehlstellungen."
