1923003094New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons 1923. Originally written in 1850 this volume edited by Margaret Armstrong in 1923 has been 'modernized' and includes 13 new full page illustrations each with a unique title. Jacob Abbott 1803 - 1879 was the author of 180 books on a variety of subjects including many volumes for children and many about religion. Abbott began his career as a college professor and was both founder and principal of three schools. He was also the founder and pastor of Eliot Congregational Church in Boston. Illustrator Helen Maitland Armstrong 1869 - 1948 worked not only on paper as she did for this volume but in stained glass. She and her sister Margaret the editor of this book also illustrated several books together. The Armstrong sister's father David Maitland Armstrong like his daughter Helen was also a noted stained glass artisan and painter. Each of the illustrations for this volume included the cover illustration are signed with the artists initials HMA in an outlined square. Editor Margaret Neilson Armstrong 1867 - 1944 was an author editor and illustrator. She began her career as a book designer and designed and illustrated more than 300 book covers many with exquisite gilt designs. She also edited books written by her brother author and journalist Hamilton Fish Armstrong. Margaret Armstrong wrote the Preface to this volume. The book is an 8vo size blue clothbound hardcover with a full color illustration laid in cover. There are/were gilt titles on cover. There are two black and white woodcuts on the endpapers both front and back which are not the work of Helen Maitland Armstrong. They may have been done by artist T.W. Roberts who illustrated earlier volumes of Abbott's Franconia stories. We also believe that he is the artist of the woodcut illustration on the title page. The book has 321 creamy deckle edged pages with color frontispiece on glossy stock covered by tissue. The color cover and color frontispiece illustrations are the same. There are black and white full page illustrations on glossy stock. There are 12 stories. A small area on bottom right of cover illustration is abraded there is some light wear to the cover illustration and there is also a tiny nick on bottom of illustration. Sunned spine with titles without the gilt has lightened area or spot on bottom of spine and is worn at head of spine. Bumped head and heel of spine edgewear to top right corner. There is an inscription on fep stamped number on rep a small paper overhang on page ix which was not trimmed during production and page 3 has two small chips in the margin. There is a small area of shelf soil on the bottom of the book. The pages are toned. A Note on Our Photos: Most photos at the beginning of the book have been cropped to the right page margin and do not show the paper overhang on page ix. Dealer Direct Payment Only.
