1998164848Cambridge MA: MIT Press 1998. Hardcover. VG- light corner bumping. Color-illustrated boards with navy and white lettering. 172 pp. Color and BW illustrations. This book addresses one of the most troubling questions of contemporary art theory and practice: Who is contemporary art for Although the divide between contemporary art and the public has long been acknowledged this is the first time that artists critics and the public have come together to debate the problem and to make artmaking criticism and public reaction part of the same process. Like the exhibitions discussions and seminars held at "The Castle" during the summer 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta this book is based on the premise that contemporary artists and the general public have something to say to each other. By positing the space of "conversation" as one in which artworks can be experienced as creative sites open to multilayered interpretations by changing audiences the book provides an antidote to the modernist connoisseurial silence that has long been used to define quality. -Amazon. 2005147807Milano Milan Italy: Charta 2005. Softcover. VG. Black & color wraps French flaps 152 pp. 321 color illus. Considers the life and work of Chilean-born artist and architect Alfredo Jaar b. 1956. "An architect interested in ephemeral structures a photographer who has grown increasingly suspicious of pictures Alfredo Jaar's most telling gesture is to relinquish the camera by placing it figuratively and sometimes literally in the public's hands. In other words Jaar is a master of indirection. And no wonder. His work was shaped at the outset by the need to speak clearly and forcefully against murderous injustice using language of the most lucid obliquity. Jaar's work declares that daring to connect and participate is our last best hope." back cover. Charta paperback books

In his answer Jacob pointed out that Saskia is not a Christian name and that it is important not to subject a child to lifelong ridicule. This exchange of letters gave him the impetus to write the charming story.†P.188 Black & Green. The story concerns a girl who is named Saskia much against her mother’s wishes. The inscription reflects Jacob’s intention of writing a playful parable for a young person “What better processes to delight the father than to love his children.â€

Jacob’s influence on modern French poetry was profound and his modernist lyrical verse is still widely read. Encyclopedia Britannica notes of Jacob: he “played a decisive role in the new directions of modern poetry during the early part of the 20th century. His “novels†mainly epistolary are exercises in verbal mimicry reproducing every nuance in the conversation of the petitbourgeois of whom he was a sardonic but affectionate observer as in Le Nom. He influenced many of his contemporaries and toward the end of his life was surrounded by a devoted group of younger and older artists.â€

Ref: online Encyclopedia Britannica: http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/298950/MaxJacob; Black Moishe & Maria Green Ed and trans. “Hesitant Fire: Selected Prose of Max Jacob†U of Nebraska Press 1991.
