Original oatmeal-coloured cloth rebacked.<br/> <br/>Provenance: Edward Kynaston Bridger d.1898 armorial bookplate; William Russell Grace 1832-1904 armorial bookplate<br/> <br/>An attractive copy of the first octavo edition of this charming work: the deluxe issue with the plates all printed on india paper.<br/> <br/>Rather than concentrating on generic descriptions of species of trees although these are given Strutt here provides a portrait in words and pictures of 50 of the greatest trees or stands of trees in England and Scotland: a snapshot of the trees as they stood in 1830. "Greatest" is here interpreted by Strutt in various ways: tallest largest girth largest spread oldest etc. The preponderence of the examples given are oaks 21 but he also includes examples of elm 6 beech 2 ash 2 chestnut 4 cedar 3 yew 3 and one each of lime poplar willow plane maple sycamore Scotch fir silver fir and larch. This work was first published by Strutt in 1826 in a folio format and was available by subscription at 9 guineas for the normal issue or for the issue with the plates on india paper 15 guineas a list of the subscribers to this folio edition is included in the present octavo edition. For the present work the folio plates were reduced and the folio text was modified to allow for the re-ordering of the trees into more coherant groupings. As with the folio edition this work was offered in two forms: at £1 11s. 6d. for the normal issue or 3 guineas for the deluxe issue with the plates on india paper as here. The early owner of this copy William Russell Grace the co-founder of W.R Grace and Co. was an American success story who rose from relative poverty to be one of the richest men in the country. 1861022383Good. 1861. Ephemera. A historic hymn that was written to Joseph Slichter a private in the Civil War from his brother Jacob Slichter of Hummelstown PA. Dated December 30th 1861. Manuscript letter is written in a clear hand. Letter has moderate toning foxing and soiling; previous owner has written "old letters" in blue ink. The letter was "coppiedsic by Edwin Bower Hummelstown Dec. 30th 1861 by request of Jacob Slichter to his brother Joseph Slichter in the army 3d Reg. Co. D. P. R.V.C. under Captain Briner in Gen McClellan Division." We do not know who first authored this hymn but we found other versions of it with stanzas in differing order but all with the same tone. The hymn is a sad one written from the perspective of a man telling his brother that he is dying: "Harken to me brother harken! I hark something I would say/Ere the veil my vision darken and I go from earth away;/I am dying brother dying; soon you'll miss me from your berth/And my form will soon be lying neath the ocean's briny surf " We found that a Jacob Slichter was aHummelstown PA Methodist minister in 1861. We hope that he was not dying when this hymn was sent to his brother but if he was it was done in a beautiful way. Joseph Slichter enlisted in Co. "D" of the 3rd Pennsylvania Reserves 32nd Infantry and mustered out on 6/17/1864 at Philadelphia PA. The first offprint is on the development of organs in phanerogams plants with seeds; "his theory of the flower and fruit is an admirable performance for the time even though we abandon his view of the stalk nature of placentas and some other notions as we obviously must. As Robert Brown founded the history of the development of the ovule so Schleiden founded that of the flower and his example influenced other botanists" Von Sachs History of Botany 1530-1860. 1850587New Hampshire 1850. 75 x 160 mm. 3 x 6 ¼ inches. Pencil sketch on blue paper.  Includes small envelope 3 x 4 ½ inches with notation. Previous folds. Light browning at folds. Small pencil sketch of a girl in a bonnet and a man who appears to be an itinerant with patched clothes and a liquor bottle in his hand. A note on the envelope accompanying the sketch and entitled in faint pencil "N.H. Portrait Painter" is signed by E.S. Eaton who writes:  "Enclosed is a drawing made by Mr. J. Bailey Moore upon a stray slip of paper as he sat making a call at our home. I a little girl was greatly pleased and have kept and been pleased with it ever since. I remember that my dear Mother was amused at the two funny figures. E.S. Eaton". Jacob Bailey Moore was born in Candia New Hampshire in 1815 and died there in 1893. For a brief time he worked in Boston before returning to New Hampshire. During his career he spent brief stints as a journalist and as a phrenologist as well as an itinerant artist. Moore is closely identified as a member of the "Prior-Hamblen" group of early 19th portrait artists. This group's work closely follows that of William Matthew Prior 1806 -73 and Sturtevant J. Hamblen 1837-56. Their portraits have been characterized as "very flat posterlike" and were painted in oils or gouache on a variety of backings including cardboard academy board or canvas. Numerous works signed by Prior have been identified as have a few signed by Hamblen. Signed works by other members of the "Prior-Hamblen" group are quite rare. Those known to have been painted by Jacob Bailey Moore feature a flat style almost identical to that of Prior. The writer may be Ellen S. Eaton who lived in Candia on a farm with her parents Henry M. and Eliza Parker Eaton. She was born in 1846 became a school teacher and appears to have never married. Ellen's father Henry M. Eaton was selectman a number of years town clerk a representative to the state legislature two years and also town agent. He was also Captain of Candia Light Infantry. He was married a second time to Hannah G.
